I'm trying to find a compact camera for a friend that needs to be very easy to operate and take decent photos. The budget is very tight (£50 to 100 max), any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, I've found Canon are the best bet for budget cameras. They take good, colourful photos on Auto, and deal with conditions well. Basically point and shoot!

I can't recommend a particular model off the top of my head, but the big rainforest site has top-selling lists with lots of customer reviews.

Or have a look at the second hand market.

I've been looking at a number of Canon and Nikon cameras that seem suitable. It's the reviews that I'm finding confusing, it's as if the writers are reviewing two different products, one loves it, the other hates it. There's also a huge range which makes it even more difficult to make a choice.

Panasonic Lumix FS16 looks like a bargain for £70.

edit: Nikon S3100 looks like it fits the bill also.

Basically, P&S cameras are great for taking snaps in good light. But not for handheld snaps in the dark. Being budget cameras, the flashes are limited, as is the lens aperture across the zoom range. But this is all symptomatic of budget cameras. I think a lot of negative press comes from people who expect to pay £100 and expect it to cope with situations cameras worth a LOT more, still struggle with.

The Nikon S3100 was one of the cameras I was looking at, along with the Canon PowerShot A1200 which has a viewfinder.

I'll take a look at Panasonic Lumix FS16, appreciate the recommendation.
