I have a Canon EOS1000D which is a great camera that I can't use properly (yet!). Took it on holiday last year and it only showed up the appalling lack of ability/nouse I have for taking photos.

Heading off on holiday again shortly but I'd like to take a smaller camera instead of the DSLR. Jacket pocket size, but obviously I'd like it to be a quality camera with good optics etc.

Is there a forum 'go to' answer for this? Is there an outstanding compact camera these days? I've not looked at any so am a blank slate so to speak...
 
Depends on budget, but my go to recommendations for a pocketable camera would be Sony RX100 (mk3 if you can afford it, if not the mk2 or even mk1 are perfectly fine and have the exact same sensor, so image quality will virtually be the same) or Panasonic LX100 if you want the best image quality in a versatile package (I'm not sure if it's truly pocketable though, even in a jacket it might be a bit bulky).

I think the Sony is the better overall package because of a built in flash, it's truly pocketable and the mk3 has a flip up screen for selfies (nice for holidays)

I would have recommend the Panasonic GM1 or GM5 if you wanted the ability to change lenses, but you already have a DSLR, so not much point really.

You're right, I didn't mention budget. To be honest it's not that much of a concern as I'm prepared to pay good money for a quality product that I'm going to get a few years of use out of. I can see the RX100 is around £300 or so and I'm comfortable with that.

Edit: Mk3 is obviously more than this!

Lenses etc aren't an issue. I just want something a little more portable than a DSLR, and a little more 'point and shoot' as well.

I got mine from DSLR Hut, for £260 and they were great. Quicker postage than stuff I ordered from Amazon on the same day.

The only problem is the lack of useable bulb mode, but it's not an issue if your using it as a holiday camera.
 
Don't rule out the canon powershot s1xx series we have one and for me it is the perfect go everywhere camera fits in a jeans pocket takes great quality photos and won't break the bank to the extent of the admittedly superior Sony RX100
 
Thanks for all the replies guys. If I could justify the cost straight away I'd probably go for the RX100 mk3, as everything I read suggests for it's form factor it is unsurpassed. Not too sure i'd find the extra features all that useful though.

Will keep an eye out for good deals on any of the suggested ones and take a trip to the local Jessops to get some 'hands on'.

At the end of the day I'm not a professional photographer, nor do I have any desire to be. All I need is a very good point and shoot compact camera that fits in my pocket!
 
I'd happily buy a used MK1, mine's been used and abused dragged across the world, covered in sand, splashed, survived days in sodden cloud forest trekking, dropped numerous times. Still works perfect.

The ISO performance for a compact is ridiculous
