Hi OC'ers,
I've two separate yet related queries;
1. I've been looking for a new keyboard for a while now. The main issue is that it needs to be somewhat compact; it has to fit in a space of 18.6", width is not an issue but depth is more of a question of preference and ergonomics, so long as it's comfortable I'm happy.
When I say ergonomics I don't want one of those odd curvy ones, just regular flat and straight for me please! Most important is the satisfaction of typing and build quality but I am a fan of laptop style keyboards.
Aesthetics are obviously important, I have a black/silver theme going on at the moment which I'd like to keep and I'm quite fond of the alluminium style but none of this is 100% necessary - performance over style if you will.
I don't mind paying more than a few leaves of cabbage for it so long as its worth it but £100 is probably too much unless my arm is (slightly) twisted.
2. I thought I had solved the issue when I came across the apple keyboard, it's very stylish, quite compact and well built but most importantly I didn't see a bad review, so I ordered it and it arrived yesterday.
Just to confirm I did consider the compatability issues of using a mac keyboard with a pc but from what I had read these issues were easily dodged or not noticed.
Of course it's not quite so simple, since the keyboard uses the Apple Mac UK keyboard layout instead of the IBM UK standard what we're all used to, several of the keys are swapped over to different locations for example key 2 has function @ and key ' has second function " but my computer still thought the format was UK so when I pressed shift+2 I got " instead.
I decided I'd much rather the key I press actually output whatever is displayed on the physical key.
I seemed to be able to fix this by switching keyboard input format to US but my web browsers are still outputting in the UK format (ie 2 ") whereas word, notebad etc are outputting correctly in the US or Mac keyboard format (ie 2 @).
All of this may not seem a huge issue and I really do like this keyboard but I really am considering sending it back; my neurotic side just can't handle the complications and inconsistencies, especially considering the lack of a print screen key.
Anyway, I'm babbling now so I'll conclude with a plea for some advice, perhaps some suggestions for new fancy keyboards or if anyone has experience using mac keyboards on a pc; solutions to get the keyboard working perfectly.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom and/or keyboard suggestions,
Regards,
Tig
