Compact recommendation with widest lens?

what you looking to spend?

i bought my girlfriend a DMC fx37 a few months back, no real complaints with that.

It depends, I like the extra 45mm on the Canon.. the LX3 is limited as a walkabout camera.

how does the TZ7 compare against the LX3?

I've got the TZ6, which is the TZ7 minus HD video pretty much, and I bought it because of the lens basically, I wanted something compact which was also pretty wide.

It looks like the LX3 has a prime lens? So it will be a bit different to use compared with most other compact cameras.

Shameless pimpage of my own thread, but here's some photos I took with the TZ6 - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18055646 IMO a pretty decent camera so I'd imagine the TZ7 would be equally as good.

Having got and LX3 I must admit I love it, the 24mm wide angle is lovely and really useful [Can't recall anything wider of the top of my head] but as stated in the post above it tops out at 60mm [x2.5 zoom] which can be a bit annoying some of the time [When you cant get any closer to the action]. Then again this is a bit one sided seeing as I haven't tried the TZ7, although most reviews seem very positive.

In my opinion:

If like me the camera is a back-up to a full dSLR set up and/or you don't need the extra magnification then you want the LX3 [The image quality SHOULD be higher due to the physically larger sensor]

However, if it'll be your only camera the TZ7 has far greater flexibility [25-300mm x12 zoom], and would be the one I'd recommend

If you want know anything more about the LX3 I do my best to answer it

vote for the tz7

Purchased other half one to go to egypt in october very impressed with it
hd video is great

*sorry for the thread highjack!*

I don't know a lot about cameras, the last one I bought was a fugifilm 2meg pixel house brick in 2001 :p

I am going to buy a nice new camera with my christmas money, I have been looking at the following:

1)Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR Review
2)Canon Digital IXUS 200 IS Digital Camera - Silver
3)
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7

The canon is a little out of budget, my budget is £100-£175

I am looking for a camera that takes excellent images of people (I am an uncle for the first time) I also want a camera that takes good images of city life. I went to Florida in May and my camera was so pants comapred to my mates 10mp olympus I ended up binning most of my shots and stealing his when we got home. :(

I am basically taking my info from this blog http://www.photographyblog.com/articles_best_digital_camera.php

I want something that can take wide images, great people shots. Basicallyh the best allround point and click camera there is for my budget.

EDIT: I do have access to my Dad's Panasonic Lumix Bridge camera that he bought last year. I just need a decent camera that fits in my pocket.

please please please help me.

I was going through the same decision process a few months back and I finally settled on the Panasonic TZ7. I set the ISO to go to a max of 400 and I must say I'm very pleased with the camera (I have a DSLR and although it is not the same quality it is great as a travel camera when you don't want to lug around an SLR).

Do note the TZ7 is slightly big and although it fits in my pocket it isn't as comfortable or portable as some others.

Slightly more expensive but the Canon S90? similar to an LX3 but with a few differences such as range and iso

I've ordered one myself for my upcoming holiday and after reading the reviews it sounds quite impressive ,I can't wait to get my mitts on it

28-105mm , 100.0 x 58.4 x 30.9 mm , weighs 175gm, shoots in RAW

perfect for carrying around in a pocket and the image quality is supposed to be pretty good
