Hi guys, the company I work for want to change their logo since they have been taken over and have asked me to have a look. They have requested something like a global map. Recruitment Company with various sites.

At work I use a budget laptop which is prone to overheating now and again and dont have access to Image editing software like photoshop. If anyone fancies knocking something up it would be much appreciated, anything to work from.

In the meantime I will try install GIMP on this pos.

If anyone can make one it would be great, im no photoshop guru. Some guys on here make fantastic signatures and designs. Any posts would give me ideas, but if thats how people that see it think then no wonder the only reply I got was yours.

Lets rephrase my post then, any help which would push me in the right direction would be welcome. Apart from learning a new version of PSP or starting photoshop from scratch, what do people do to begin designing their website logo's and sigs?

TIA

You need a concept, you can't just say design me a logo. A logo reflects the companys identity, it can't just be a few fancy shapes with their name next to it.

What kind of company is it, what do they do etc etc

Yes, start with a simple concept. Write down some words -doesn't matter how loosely connected they are- on paper to get you going. "jobs, global, world, people, corporate, helping-hand". Get some of their marketing spiel and extract some keywords to help you formulate the concept.

You also need to decide what sort of logo you're going for - be it symbol, text, combination or combination plus a tagline. http://www.elf-design.com/articleLogoTypes.html

I'd recommend creating the logo in a vector-format, to give you complete flexibility on your output formats; be it letterhead, poster, web, clothing etc. In this respect a well-designed logo should work as well in 2-colours/greyscale as it does in full-colour.

Good tools are Inkscape, Illustrator and Freehand: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vector_graphics_editors
Good manual for Inkscape: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Thanks very much for that info guys. I will get to work onto these links and try to construct something to work from.

OK I have made some progress, I shall post the basic info about new design. The company name is to be SPI Global, so I came up with this:

Linky

I know its not very good but its something to work on. Ideally I think a simple globe type image (sphere) and the text being basic. I will try again using Inkscape as drawing sphere type object with gimp is proving to be a nightmare.

Don't use upside down text, it will make the logo difficult to read. The logo needs to be clear and concise.

And when it comes to logos, Photoshop isn't the way to go anyway. You want something scaleable, so Illustrator (or similar) for the win.

Get the 30 day demo off the Adobe site.

Hmm... It's called SPI Global, so use a globe... i wouldn't go so literal myself. Pretty much every company called Global something or other uses a globe, and the incessant variations on the theme are just as tired, clichéd and over-familiar as the inevitable use of a blue flame to represent a letter on practically every independent gas fitters van. :p

BTW If you use the globe as the dot above the i, You deserve a home visit from Octacon, Gilly & Feek.

I tried a few different approaches yesterday, but the boss restricted me in the end to two main constraints.

1) Green
2) Map or Globe image incorporated

My guile on this is now limitted, but I have a basic design which im happy with as it can be tweaked and if any more professionalism is required they can pay company to take it further.

This was created using inkscape (thanks for that Aug). If anyone wants to show off their ideas or expand upon mine feel free.
