Guys

Just wondering if anyone can help me briefly.

My office is moving to a new place, the company that we use for IT etc has costed some stuff up and i think it sounds like they are ripping us off.

Just looking for a generic guide as to what we should pay for the following:

(All the ethernet cabling points, underfloor cabling etc is done at the new office)

IT company are basically coming in to do the following:

Disconnect the existing server then Connect 15 or so pc's to server at the new office and internet (server is the same one we are taking with us so shouldn't be much needed to do there)

Disconnect 15 or so phones and reconnect them at the new office.

Internet connection is already sorted at the new office so nothing to do there and all equipment is existing stuff that we are taking with us.

No new numbers/people etc involved

Any ideas of costs etc?? Just generic stuff?
Thanks

Largest cost will be the phone system.

Probably a days labour to do all the physical moving and re-connecting, so I dunno £600?

forgot to say that we have to move all our own stuff as in transport our own phones and server to the new office

So why are you getting someone in to do it?

Just turn the server off, unplug, turn computers off, unplug, Move, plug in, turn on.

Do you have exchange?

You can't just move the phones from one site to another, as I imagine the system is bolted to the wall if its anything like ours.

yeah - phone exchange is bolted to the wall but a new one is in place at the new office so i guess that needs configuring etc

have you got them give you an actual proper breakdown of the tasks they are completing, and how much they are charging you for each part?

it's a difficult one to advise on this, because we don't know much about your environment. when you say 'server' what it is actually serving? is it just centralised storage, or do you something like sbs which also takes care of your mail, vpn, etc? are you also running a line of business application on it?

obviously if it is the latter two then there is likely to be more involved than just picking it up and moving it, i'm thinking along the lines of mx record changes if your public ip addresses are changing etc.

also, if your 'server' is mission critical to you, are they taking an additional precautionary backup before moving the server between the buildings? what if there is an accident either with the vehicle that is being used to transport it, or if someone were to drop it down the stairs or something.

just a few things, there are lots others, that you may not have taken into consideration...which is why i suggested getting a proper breakdown from your supplier. hope this helps! :)

Labour is likely to be a fair bit of the price quoted.

I know plenty of companies that do this type of work, £300 / day for a tech or more is not uncommon depending on what is involved.
