okay ive just re-installed Company of heroes Gold Edition.. the inlay suggests you do the following :-

* Install COH OF first
* Enter Account screen
* Enter Product Key
* Enter Product key for Company of Heroes
* Insert Company of Heroes DVD to verify media

ok fine, did all that then applied about 10 more patches upto the point were Relic installs its own torrent patcher

finally get ingame and all is well however i have no Dx10 option which i recall was patched into the game a loooong time ago, and although this isnt a deal breaker i remember the quality/effects did look a lot better...

anyone out there currently playing who can confirm there should be an option for switching to Dx10 from Dx9 plz ?

headrats right, the shader quality set to the highest setting uses DX10. They just renamed the option in one of the more recent patches.

It's a setting called ultra just put everything to ultra and you will be in dx10 on one of the settings not sure which probably shader quality it's greyed out on xp so that's the one.

thanks for the replies !! i have all the sliders on Max/Ultra but wasnt aware that the dx10 was intergrated .. cheers

I'm going to be buying a new system when the Direct X 11 cards start coming out. I haven't played many PC games in the last few years. Is Company of Heroes the RTS to go for at the moment ?

while it is the best RTS made by a mile even though it must be, what, 3 years old now (?) , Relic's support has been less than stellar, they completely fail to listen to the community on anything but the most basic of balance issues and even then take far longer than is reasonable (testing being a joke since it seems their QA gets worse with every patch), plus their habit of making balancing the game harder by introducing two new factions, then several new units (in both cases ridiculously OP to start with, probably to get u to fork over the cash, ******s)

I was totally addicted to this game, lost whole weekends, but after the second or third uninstall, I've now been able to stave off relapses by visiting the GR forums and seeing that the game is still worse than it was when I started playing it two and a half years ago

Agreed entirely. I can't see how they can fix it without ripping out massive chunks of the existing game. Brits especially.
Panzer Elite are under powered so the whole thing is a nonplus as far as expansions go...

Dawn of War 2 is going the same way. I was in the patch testing thing, and despite my logical protestations my friend said it was better.
A week later he's fed up because it's dull as anything and the most poorly thought-out feature in any RTS (melee bonus damage) has been buffed to hell through units that use it.

Never mind eh? :)

i guess the above problems only matter if your playing competatively ?

the single player campaigns are superb and have tons of replayability, but i found the best fun was teaming up with a few mates and fighting vs Computer AI ..

as RTS go this is probably the best ive played ...

If you like WW2 RTS;

- Order of War looks pretty good, out in a week or two - and there's a demo available.

- Men of War is very detailed, lots to learn -too much at first, very cheesy cutscenes and not that polished - but can be quite rewarding once you start to master it. It's like the ARMA2 of RTS's. You should be able to get a demo of this.

Thank for the info guys. I think when I get my new PC I will try it out. I'm not to worried about online at the moment or the extra expansion packs. That will just be if I love the game. The Setllers 1 on the Amiga and Age of Empires 2 are two of my favorite games ever so it has a lot to live upto!

As the game is 2006 have the graphics aged well ?

The graphics have aged amazingly well! I still play this a lot and the 1vs1 auto-matches cant be beaten for fun!

This is one of the rare PC games I play and I must admit, it cant be beat

Yes there are some imbalances, but you are talking top level players that really need to worry about that.

In med skill games (or similar) you can easily beat anyone using PE, Assault Grens, Shrek Grens w/ Jagd and some other armor is easily a match for the US or Brits.

I admit the Brits can be easier to play if you are against weaker players, but at the same level(ish) you will be challenged no matter what.

A good quick Axis player(s) can easily put a lot of pressure on the Brits... and vice versa.

I love the game, play 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, 2v 2pc, 2v 3pc etc all sorts of combos and I often have a game per night if not more, as its a good way to round off the evening.

There are still at least 6-7000 players online at peak times, games are easy to be had and even if you dont want to play humans, a challenge can be had vs the AI especially if you stack the odds in their favor. 3 human v 4 expert AI on Montargis is brutal!

Oh and dont really worry about Tales of Valour, get the original and OF (can be had sometimes on bargains in Steam). OF gets you the 2 new factions (Brits/PE) ToV just adds about 8 units for MP iirc? Plus some game types but VP / Anni is where its at.

mlb what rank are you 1v1? when I left there were some bugs that ruined the game at any level - 'burstfire' bug that mean units that had a burst then reload style attack would immediately start the burst again if they killed a unit, meaning something like the PE armoured car could kill a whole paratrooper unit without having to reload. Also ToV brought in 'alternate' units that were not 'alternate' just better.

You might also like the Anno games, Anno 1404 is the latest.

I dont play 1v1 - i like the bigger scale battles, so I can understand why glitches/imba can affect 1v1 as its more direct to you

In team games, as long as you are in a decent setup most things can be accounted for due to the numbers in the skirmishes/battles
