I was just wondering if anyone had found a viable workaround to the seemingly random "NAT negotiation failure" problem while trying to play CoH with some mates as its driving me bonkers!!!!!

There is the odd time when we connect straight away for 3-4 games in a row with no issues whatsoever but most of the time we get the "NAT negotiation failure" problem and we just cant connect to each others games!!??!!

We've tried opening ports, opening "DMZ" on routers, closing down the uploader along with a laundry list of other tweaks and still cant get it to work all the time!?!?

It cant be a setting as sometimes it works perfectly!!!

Has anyone had the same problem and sorted it???

Cheers,

StevieP

Just about everyone is in the same boat unfortunately....

A case of find a friend that everyone can connect to was the only solution people here on OcUK came up with when we were playing...

Gutted!!!!!!

I love this game and I've had some cracking battles in the past but the connection issue is just killing it!!!!!

Is it worth e-mailing Relic do you think??

Are you all on the same connection?

Me and some friends at uni had this problem whilst there, but now we've all gone home for holidays, there are no problems.

No, we are all at our own respective houses and it just seems to be random failures!!

I get a little red cross next to the game that my mate sets up and I cant connect either through directly joining or through the friend invite system!

We've had it in the past where we have been trying for the best part of an hour and then all of a sudden it will connect and be just fine!?!?!?!

Annoying isnt the word but this is a family forum!!!

I have had this problem in the past. As far as I can recall it boiled down to a clash happening with a combination of two routers. Other people could connect to myself and friends' games, but I could not connect to this one player at all. Do either of you have a different router you could swap out for? Admittedly the problem you are having doesn't sound quite the same as the problem does not crop up for you 100% of the time.

Perhaps try having a "LAN" game using Hamachi - it's a different way of getting around the routers' firewalls and might do the trick. You need to both be able to ping each other on hamachi, turn off Windows firewalls (or add exceptions for Hamachi) as required.

By the way, as I understand it CoH multiplayer is peer to peer (not server-client) so if you can't connect when one of you is the person creating the game lobby you won't be able to connect when someone else creates the lobby and your friend has already joined. Because when you try to join a game, you have to successfully establish a connection to every player.

I read somewhere that you could:
a) restart your game
b) clear the COH Cache
c) restart your whole PC

and that sometimes fixes it. Start from the top and work down. Thats all the advice I can give you since it was months ago I read that.

It is problematic, it varies from router to router.

I had similar problems with Operation Flashpoint and it involved disabling PnP or something like that in the route menu, ever since I have had no problems with Operation Flashpoint or CoH. Hope that helps, but it is a tricky one. I spent hours on Google trying to get it to work and did in the end.

what router are you using?

if its a BT home hub i had to use a program called port mapper to forward the ports client side as well as on the router. As long as your router has upnp enabled the program should work. Helped me and my mates connect and play CoH flawlessly. Although now i have a different router so i dont need it.

theres a link to it if you want to try it. Just make sure you forward 6112 udp on the router and using port mapper to YOUR IP.

*edit also if you dont want to try that program change the person who is hosting the game, they introduced a proxy connection thing a while back so that everyone in the game will run through a proxy to connect to the host, i cant explain it but it basically fixed a lot of the nat problems.

It's because some people don't or cant port forward correctly.

No its not....

I have all the right ports forwarded (as per my original post!) and it still doesnt work most of the time!

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll give a couple of ideas a try and see what happens!!!

I had this issue until I forwarded the ports. Was a pain, but only takes 5 mins so if you've done it correctly you should have no problems. Just make sure you set up a static ip to send them to! :p
