Been asked to check a Celeron powered HP/Compaq 6720S that keeps freezing up. This laptops were given out by AOL/Carphone Warehouse over a year ago for new ADSL customers entering contract.

It has a Seagate Momentus 5400.4 ST9120817AS HDD that has issues and has a S.M.A.R.T. error warning upon powering on.

Tried the laptop's BIOS HDD check and it wouldn't start, so have begun a SeaTools DOS boot disk long basic test. Upon starting the test it reported that the drive had exceeded 70**°C sometime. So guessing the drive is going to need replacing.

Anyway, has anyone else replaced the HDD in this model and know of a cheap and cool running unit? SSD is out consideration.

I was considering a WD Black, but if the original HDD over heated then a 7200k rpm drive may not be a sensible option.

with laptops its a piece of string, they can be used in various scenarios, desks, carpets on beds etc, this can quite easily push the temps up to this with lack of air flow, usually if you getting the smart error on start up its time to replace the HD, any stata unit should be fine, the specs on most hard drives are almost identical. Just keep the fans clear and the unit on a hard service.
