after some much needed help with the following please, my laptop is a presario c700 when i turn it on it says the error message "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key", have checked boot order, and only option is cd/dvd drive, no hard disk option, in bios it only gives cd/dvd boot option, have performed hdd test and memory test, which come back fine, seems to be no bootable software on the laptop, looks like i have no windows or software or drivers what so ever anymore, i assumed i could restore the laptop with out discs as it says on leaflet supplied with it, but cant find how to, i dont think this function is present anymore either, i dont have a restore disc as it didnt come with one, was running vista
any help much appreciated
thanks

just tried installing windows xp from disk and it loads up then says "set up did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer"
now i'm truly stumped!?!?!?!?

Sounds like the HD or the controller is borked!...

Can you whip the Disk out and try it in any other machine (might need a caddy or adapter to do this!!)

Press F11 on Compaqs start the HD restore if it has the partition, if its sata then win xp may not pick up the drive due to sata drivers not being installed. There is a way if you google it though.
