Hi All

Its been a little while since I have purchased new PC parts, so could do with some advice on compatibility before buying.

CPU - AMD Bulldozer FX-8 Eight Core 8120 Black Edition 3.10Ghz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail

Motherboard - Asus M5A99X EVO AMD 990X (Socket AM3+) DDR3 PCI-Express ATX Motherboard

Memory - Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit

Total Price = £339.96

I upgraded my existing power supply recently so that's no problem, I have an existing case and hard drives, plus my 5770 graphics card which I will update at a later stage when funds allow.

The new purchases listed above, does anyone see any compatibility issues before I buy ?

Cheers

Can I ask why you have selected a AMD setup? you know intel offer cheaper faster CPUS?

Whats the uasge of this PC?

Are your drives SATA?

I run a intel quad core (6600) system at the moment that I want to utilize for something else, so thought about a cheep upgrade.

All hard drives are Sata drives coming from an older Abit IP35 Pro board.

Why AMD this time over Intel, fancied a change from Intel, liked the look of the FX CPU.

Edit - System use, running a VM or two, casual gaming and media streaming, general use.

So if I showed you a i5 2500K (£155-£170) beating easily a 8150BE (£225) - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=434 - while using less wattage and running cooler, this wouldn't convince you?

Stu, will tell you i have an i5 running at 4.6GHz with temps MAX at 71oC. On air from a standard of 3.3GHz. These are amazing chips, considering those benchmarks are at standard/stock.

And you done it with the same motherboard as above:)

is the 16gb for the vm use? as the other usage doesn't scream 16gb needed.
now no need for flamming etc as this(vm) is something I've used so not sure on the ram usage required.

Thanks for the i5 recommendations guys, just goes to show I didn't do much reading on the new chips, glad I asked now :)

As for the RAM, yes it would be for running VM's, why have 8gb when you can have 16gb, or is more memory being an issue ?

No issue, VM machines eats loads of RAM, the only issue is more RAM sticks can put more strain on the meory controller making it harder to overclock as high compared with using just two sticks.

Not really fussed about overclocking tbh as my current quad core is on stock, its memory that I'm currently throttled by when trying to run multiple vm's so the more memory the better.

Well it will still do like 4.5GHz as this is the board, its just the "upper" frequencies that will be more difficult.
