Compatibility Issues with ageing PC

Hi

I haven't updated my PC in ages but decided to get hold of GTA V so it desperately needed a boost.

Current spec is as follows (don't laugh):

Q6600
TPower i45 motherboard
6850 gfx (see below)
Corsair 520w psu
8gb of ddr2 ram
256gb SSD
128gb SSD
2 x hard drives
DVD drive
Lian Li case

So, I saw a great offer on a gtx660 gfx card and went for it quickly, but have been having major problems since. Basically I get no video output from the card at all, tried different monitors, cables, hdmi, dvi, two different 6 pin power cables, etc and no luck.
I sent the card back and they found no fault, it was suggested that my motherboard is so old that it may not support the 660, which would mean I need a new motherboard, processor and ram as a minimum.

Any thoughts, suggestions, sympathy etc gratefully received!

imo if you can, bite the bullet and upgrade.

You will see a dramatic improvement in all your games and will push more performance out of that 660.

Socket 775 days are over I'm afraid.
 
Yeah, I had a look at the bios update options, which were not good.

It's funny how long you can go with a working pc until you realise it has been quite a few years since you did anything to it.

Any suggestions for a budget upgrade combination to work with the 660 and keep me going for a few more years?

GTA V is a pretty CPU intensive game too, my 3570k at stock sees 80-90% usage across all cores. You'd be best upgrading the CPU, Motherboard, RAM and GPI, keeping what you can (PSU, SSD's, case etc.).

Also a 580 with 1.5GB of vram struggles to hold 60fps at 1080p on pretty average settings. It's a demanding game, needs a decent amount of GPU and CPU grunt.

Thanks all, it's taken me a while to reply as I just put my 6850 back in and one of the 6 pin power connectors came out at the (modular) psu end, so it's taken a while to get that back in.... that wasn't the problem by the way!

That looks like a great package deal, although the 4440 is getting on a bit now, isn't it? It's also more than I would like to spend, if possible.

MM is a good option, I'll be trawling through there for a few hours tonight - any links to some good sales would be helpful, if they're allowed?

Theres something just to start with.

Update the BIOS on the board or ask if its on the latest as this board is notorious for needing updating to then work with new GFX cards.

Then you just need 8Gb of RAM (2x4GB).

Thanks to everyone, especially Stulid as I have agreed a deal to buy this full kit including the case and PSU, as I'm worried my 520w unit is running out of gas.

I'm already about £200 over budget, so 1600 will have to do.

I was matching the red with my gfx card, didn't think about the blue board.
