Hi, looking to upgrade my CPU, i have these in mind:

Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 2.93GHz (1066FSB)

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB)

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.5GHz 4MB-cache (1333FSB)

i would like to know which of these is the best one to go for when gaming, i am using the following:

Gigabyte P35-S3G
BFG Geforce 8800GT OC
4Gig ram @ 800 Mhz
Windows XP pro 32bit (will be upgrading to win 7 64bit)

thank you

oh and would a cpu cooler be necessary if so can u recommend one prefer not to buy one tho

The P35-S3G is compatible with all of them. For gaming, I say the quad core is a poor choice because it is clocked lower, and the extra cores will likely be very little use.

thanks so i should go for the core 2 duo 3ghz or will there be little difference form the 2.93

I'd say go for the E8400 due to it's slightly higher clocks and higher FSB at 1333.

If you are going to overclock the CPU then yes a cooler is needed but if not then you will get away with using the stock cooler that comes with the CPU.

I say the 3ghz gets more of an edge than its total clock speed would have you think, because it has a significantly faster FSB. Whether its £35 faster though, is your call.

Note that there are other differences, like lack of virtualization support on the 7xxx series.
