Compatible InkJet Cartridges

Got an Epson DX7450 All-In-One printer and to date have been using Epson Inks. a 4 colur multipack is around £20 except for one of the High Street Stationery shops where it is £43.
As the printer seems to enjoy a good drink of Ink when printing photos, the cost of printing is fairly high (at home for convenience).
Has anyone tried the compatible ink cartridges? If so any good? Obviously printer manufacturers frown upon them and claim all sorts of bad things will happen to your printer if you don't use their supplies.

I guess you wouldn't really want to save a few quid here and there and get grief from the results and the printer supplier.
