ok, so i installed mint 10 debian, had a few issues with the updates but sorted that. went to enable the compiz 3d desktop stuff, but no 3d desktop option in hardware. there is a compiz config bit though, so turned on all the bits i had on in mandriva and nothing :( so i searched the software manager and installed compiz, now there are loads more settings in compiz config, but still, none of them work :( any ideas?

Could it be partly a gfx driver issue?

Not familiar with mint, I've always used Fedora, but have had loads of problems with Compiz over the years caused by horrendous ATI GFX support.

Last couple of versions of Fedora have had reasonable reliable open source ATI drivers, compiz works fine, however games play with a framerate of 1 or less.......

It might not be supported then; I'm pretty sure Compiz requires hardware 3D acceleration. Try searching for your card + compiz on Google. I'd post more but I'm off to do the school run now! :)

Cool, thanks for posting that. It's always a good idea to share solutions to help those who may come searching later. :)

no worries, im slowly working my way through things bit by bit. a few things have been harder than i would have liked, but nothing has beat me yet.
am very suprised how quickly and easily you can find a solution via google compaired to windows based problems.

yeh, but then that was the only option (other than creating a new user) when mandriva went wrong on me. thats why i made the change to mint.

I love the look of MiNT but I have never found it to be reliable at all for me, there has always been some issues or another that crops up.
Similarly ,I have had flawless use out of ubuntu and the one thing that has always hit mne with ubuntu is the title on windows eventually vanishes... Reloading the Windows manager usually cures it, and I do this by bringing up the compiz icon and selecting reload WM but since v11 its not brought it up and I have not been able to repair it.

Sabayon on the other hand has NEVER let me down and thats my main Linux. I have all the eye candy on that and I have also manager to install many many games and I still have not had a single crash or problem with it... Bit of a miracle considering that I am a total prat when it comes to Linux, but then I dont do anythign unless I am 100% sure that I am going to do it right.
