Complete CS Noob Server Question

I mainly play single player FPS, but as I have the gold Steam package I fancy having a go at CS vs some equally Noob friends (preferably on a private server).

My question is how do I set this up? I've had abit of a google and can only find sites offering servers by the month for £12-£15. Is there a free way of doing this as we will only play occasionally?

Just looking for a link to a guide or even just the right terms to be googling for!

If you have a reasonable broadband connection then you could host one on your own machine if it's just for a mess about. As long as it's not too many people you'll be ok. That or just find an empty server and all jump on.
