Hi Guys, :)

Finally after years of only using laptops I have decided to shell out for a new system. Ill be using it for a bit of everything really (including demanding things like cad and gaming).
Below is the one I have specced up... any improvements you can think of for around the same money or anyway to save money? (i.e. is a sound card necessary?) Anything i have forgotten (i have a decent mouse and all software)
Also is now a good time to buy? i always seem to put this off as im scared something new will come out but suppose will have to take the plunge one day!

P.s. I won't change my mind on the amount of ram (so please dont try!) but is that particular model a good choice?

Cheers :)

Looks good. I myself would get the Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 and not geta Sound card, as the sound card in the Asus ROG boards are every good.

Other than that look at the sharkoon rebel 12 case. great and half the price.

Load it up with a few noctuas or other silent fans.
I'd go with a zalman psu, just for quietness
and a thermaltake 120 etreme cpu cooler and a noctua 120 fan.

do you lap you CPU and how long do you expect the q6600 to remain in the PC for?

if you dont lap and plan to use the cpu for over 1 year ,i say pay £5 more and get the retail q6600 and enjoy having 2 more years on the warranty, however if you are planning on lapping the cpu ,stick with the OEM as lapping will invalidate the warranty anyway

P.s. I won't change my mind on the amount of ram (so please dont try!) but is that particular model a good choice?
For that amount, hope you have a 64-bit OS. But this package is cheaper :)

Think PSU is overkill for that spec as-is i.e. single GFX & HDD. I'd go for the modular (neater) & cheaper HX 520W. Rest looks ok ;)

EDIT: Looking at the dimensions of the PC-A71 & considering your spec, its HUGE... 5 x 5.25" bays, 6 x 120mm, etc  If you want something with a door, maybe Antec P182.

Thank's for the reply's everyone.
Think I'll stick with that mobo as the other one is quite expensive, more than with the sound card I selected.
I will be overclocking so no point in getting the retail and yah I have vista 64 ultimate so all is good on that front.

That memory looks good cheers for that. :) Is it definately not worth getting PC8500?

Changed the PSU to the modular as recommended. Is that definately ok for overclocking etc?

Thanks again in advance. :D

If your a little less frivolous with the components, you'd be amazed at what you can get for £1500... I got 8GB RAM, dual 4870's, a Q9450, a 750w PSU (very good quality) and a 24" monitor. If you wanna check out what I got look here, you might get some ideas

Had a look, some good ideas but wanna get the dell and those speakers which would bring it to a lot more.

This is what I have come to now. Any last minute suggestions before I order?

Cheers :)

Gilbretto, this 2008 not 1989

a bit over, and you could save money by going PC6400 and then adding that money to the sound card if you want.
