Hi all, complete noob here needing advice.

I have a friend who can help build a computer for/with me but have never done this before and would like to know a couple of things :)

How much roughly would you fine people say i would need to spend for an Intel Quad Q9550 and an Nvidia Geforce GTS 250 graphics card?

Because those are the 2 parts i know are good and know i want but most computers with that processor which are already built, either dont have the ram i want or have something else i dont need making the price higher.

What chipset/motherboard is best for that combo of cpu and gfx card? wanting roughly 4gig of ram dont want to bottleneck the power of the q9550 or the card.

And here is a question which will split you all lol....

I want to buy this particular case but i cant seem to find it anywere, its not on ebay either :( I have a feeling you CANT buy it as an empty case. And i know 3 quarters of you will say "its a horrid case!!!" i love it ;) so is there a case similar to it?

Its the Acer Ranger/Predator case.

thankyou everyone

1) Don't get a Q9550. They're old now and better CPUs are available. The GTS250 is OK, but only at 1680x1050 and below.

2) Doubt you'll be able to buy it, but you could try contacting Acer's spares/repair department. They might let you have one.

oh ok, im not sure which processor to go for then. I want a processor what will be capable of all modern games and be ready for future games too. Im not an "Extreme" gamer or an overclocker. But i do like to dabble on call of duty online and latest command and conquer games.

Something like the Intel Core i5 750 would be a good choice. It's faster than the Q9550 and more modern. Not badly priced either. I'd pair it with a Radeon 5770 or similar.

A budget and what you plan to reuse from the current system would be helpful.

It sounds like you are on a tight budget so AMD would be the route to go in my opinion as CPU's and motherboards are cheaper than Intel.

well i have roughly £800 to spend, im happy to blow all that on the unit itself. So not a massive budget but not small either?

I honestly didnt think the q9550 was old yet? and i thought the quad cores were being brought out purposly for future demands.

The computer will be used simply for every day things such as facebook, internet surfing, msn, microsoft word. ( which is very minimal i know) But here comes the big part...

Im an avid pc gamer, i wouldnt call myself extreme and play 24 hours a day or anything. But i do play on the pc rather than ps3/xbox, so i need something which is powerful enough to run all modern graphical demanding games smoothly. hopefully as smooth as a ps3 would

Im currently using a laptop Samsung R20+, not powerful at all, but it managers to play Guild Wars lol, I used to be a massive online gamer when i was younger and would like to return to that of some sorts but over the past few years i havnt had a computer powerful enough

Yeah, it was replaced several months ago. In fact, the entire Core 2 line has just been superseded. Core i5 and i7 are where it's at now.

Nope i dont need all the periphials, im more than happy to blow the £800 purely on the tower alone.

The core 2 quads were suspended? wow.... i thought they were only brought out middle of last year sometime, and most forums and reviews i read say the q9550 is a beast. I know the i5 and i7s are the brand new ones, maybe i need to educate myself about them, i just thought 4 cores for future are going to be legendary lol and the i7's seem a bit pricey but i dont want to get the "low" version of the range like the i5/i3. Thats why i originally wanted the q9550 because it was one of the top models of its range and its affordable.

I always thought it was hugely cheaper to build it yourself, forgive me but i have no real experience in this so what im saying may be just nonsense lol But from people iv spoken too the conversation usually goes like this.....

Me - I want to build my own computer for gaming
Person - Ok, how much you got to spend?
Me - About £800
Person - Wow.... iv just built one for £450, you will get a pretty decent computer for £800!
Me - ok, cool!

But the more i read into it, the more i begin to panic lol

I suggest you read the FAO regarding competitors!

I built this rig last night. We didn't need a case or DVD drive but it gives you some idea of what you could get for £800 if you added those on.

thanks for that info reflux.

Thats EXACTLY the problem i keep coming across...

All the computers i see already built with the processor and gfx card i want, all have top of the range motherboards, top of the range ram and liquid cooling, or a very expensive case.. Which jacks the price up, when i dont need all those things

Im just an average gamer not extreme, why would i need liquid cooling?lol I havnt found 1 website yet which allows you to FULLY build your own pc, they always give u 1 or 2 options, both of which i dont need

Yeah, it's annoying isn't it. That's why I always build myself because that way you get exactly what you want, for the price you want. Only you know your own requirements.

I have no idea about motherboards or cooling :( All i know is the higher the processor numbers the better lol same with the gfx card.

I wouldnt know which is a good/compatible motherboard for the q9550 and a Gefore GTS250.

Iv just added things to my basket, (motherboard, cooling, power were all randomly picked because i know nothing) and it came upto 700

can someone please tell me how good or bad this computer is?

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
4GB DDR2 800MHz memory
2x 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT
2x 640GB SATA hard drive (7200rpm)
Blu Ray Reader and DVD Rewriter
Liquid CPU Cooling

Its basically the Acer Sniper II Gaming PC

No competitors

I wouldn't pay that if it was new, let alone refurbished. It's all last generation tech. The main parts are all about two years out of date. The CPU cooling will also be a poor performing cheapo job.

honestly you are best to build one yourself.. it will be a bit of a learning curb first time round but it will be a huge sense of achievement and to be fair once you get a bit of an understanding its not all that difficult! and you will get a lot more for your money

Plenty of people here to help out / give advise..

that is such a poor setup for the price, you can build so much better for same price.
