Hi there,

I just got my new system set up:

  • Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
  • Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • OCZ 2GB PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Rev.2 XTC Series DDR2 Memory
  • BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler

I was looking into overclocking it but have never attempted it before, nor do I know anything about overclocking.

So I wondered if anyone out there could give a run down for me. A bit of an idiots guide if you will... 1) Do this. 2) Do that. 3) Use this software etc. I'm currently running Windows Vista.

I don't want to reduce the life of my componants if possible, so a nice sensible overclock would be preferable. Something that doesn't run too hot etc.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

Ok, having had a good read of the sticky you linked, I think I will put any overclocking on hold, at least until the 1yr standard warranty expires.

Can't afford to do any hardware replacement should anything go wrong

Thanks anyway.

hehe its normal to feel that way when you have never overclocked before. If you read the sticky and feel that you have adequate cooling and monitor your temps etc, you cant go wrong. You wont kill any components by overclocking unless you increase their voltages to unsafe levels without proper cooling. You could tinker at the overclocking things and learn how it works and use small FSB increases etc safe in the knowledge that you wont bork anything. Just leave voltage settings alone :P

After my components were overheating at stock, i actually reduced my V-core :) (Madman is a friend of mine, we bought similar specs at the same time i think) Not that it made any difference, but was a nice first tinkering step :) Once i get my noctua HS/fan (Had a bit of temp trouble with the AC7 since reseating so just gonna go for the big boy) i'll be looking into minor oc's to get my confidence up and keep me temps down :)

So if I just nudge the FSB up a bit, what would be safe idle/usage temperatures?

If I could get from 2.4 to 3 without too much temperature increase that would be nice.

i like to keep my temps under 60C full load. a 6600 @ 334mhz FSB shouldnt break a sweat. There are other factors to consider but nudge the FSB up to 334, run some orthos small fft tests and monitor those temps with TAT/Coretemp and see how you go :)
