Hi all.

Im toying with the idea of upgrading my machine to make it pretty futureproof before I move into my own place and dont have the cash too.

Here are my specs.

Operating System
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz (running at 4GHz)
Bloomfield 45nm Technology
RAM
12.0GB Triple-Channel DDR3 @ 599MHz (7-9-9-22)
Motherboard
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. EX58-UD5 (Socket 1366)
Graphics
BenQ XL2420T (1920x1080@60Hz)
3072MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series (Sapphire/PCPartner)
Storage
238GB SanDisk SDSSDHP256G ATA Device (SSD)
1863GB Seagate ST32000542AS ATA Device (SATA)

I want to play all the up and coming games at a high standard. Examples being FarCry 4, GTA V, BF4.

What are the forum's thoughts? Also, what kind of value could I get selling my old parts?

Thanks

That looks like a 7950 or 7970 GPU? I'd drop in an SSD, otherwise that PC looks ok

Can't check prices on this forum, only allowed in the Member's Market
You could sell the 79xx and drop in a GTX 970 or something like that, your CPU should be fine even for current games. At 1080p though, your current PC should be fine unless you feel you don't get enough FPS?

Do you have a CPU cooler on that CPU? If not, add one of those too and OC the CPU :) Free performance

Thank you for the advice.

The CPU has a watercooler on it, I done a lot of reading into overclocking and got it upto 4GHz at a stable temperature. (According to CPUz)

Im just a little out of the loop and reading as much as I can can. But, it can get a little confusing.

In a nutshell do you think a graphics upgrade alone would be ok?

Well definitely add an SSD, makes everything much more snappy.

Try the games and see what kind of FPS you get. The 79xx series GPUs will give solid performance at 1080p which is what you're playing at, so you should be ok. If (after the SSD) you feel you don't get as many FPS that you want/not high enough graphics settings, drop in a GTX 970 which'll destroy 1080p :)

I have an SSD

Oh fail missed that, sorry

So yeah, try the games and see how you get on. If they aren't too great, a GPU upgrade will be great

Hi all

As you can see I have had thoughts about upgrading in November.

I am still toying with the idea of upgrading or getting a new machine. Do our loyal members think its worth while, Im wanting to play Battlefield 4 & Hardline in as much quality as possible.

Would probably be up for spending around £600 (I have a monitor and a SSD)

Your current PC is still quite decent, and the GPU should be strong enough to play BF4 + BF:HL with no problems at high/ultra settings. What I'd do is put the £600 towards a new cpu, mobo and possibly RAM (probably won't be required) when Broadwell comes out so you have some new kit to play with. You could get a new GPU then too, or do a mobo/cpu refresh now with a Z97 board which has *rumoured* future Broadwell support so you could put one of those in in the future should you want to upgrade

I've just upgraded to your motherboard fitted with a Xeon 5650 hexcore cpu overclocked to 4.4Ghz (got from MM), from a Q6600 @ 3,6Ghz, and it's absolutely flying!

I strongly recommend getting one of these and o/cing it. They were going for around £55-70 odd on ebay, but I think they may have gone up a touch.

would have to agree with others, the CPU\mobo and ram are fine, I have the I7 950 @ 4ghz and find gaming fine with this.

I did have a 970 in my system before it went back because of the vram side of things so back to a Radeon HD 5830.

GPU upgrade would be the best thing to do next, I am currently waiting for AMD to release their cards before buying a new one.

other option is a monitor as well as Freddie said unless your happy at gaming at 1080P
