I've not seen anyone complain that there Freesync/Gsync monitor wasn't worth the purchase, especially considering you going to 1440 pixel density as well. You could also keep you existing monitor if you have the space.
290x isn't the leading card in terms of outright performance but it is AMD's top single card and you would be hard pressed to find better value at that price point from any vendor.
There comparable most owners don't have complaints and there is a deal where you get GTA V, The Witcher 3 aand a OCUK Xxl mousepad for free. The only issue is the last 0.5 Gb of the cards memory is virtually unusable as it runs a lot slower then the rest of the vram This can lead to suttering in some games but at 1080p you should be fine. Over that its dependent on what game you play.
In the same boat as you, also have a 920, was tempted to go X99 but I can't justify it at the moment so i'm going to upgrade my gpu. Going to wait and see what to 300 series looks like, but the 970 is looking very tempting.
