I already have a dvd-rw drive NEC3250A I think (no cables or anything with it, will they come with the motherboard?)

Its DDR2, dont know about motherboard or processor combo so that could change to DDR1

The total for that is £314.77 but I need a CPU and motherboard.

An E6300 is £120
An AMD2 3500+ is £65
Pentium 4 3.0GHz is £57
Pentium 4 820 is £70

I have no idea on motherboards. Any suggestions for the processors above? I would love a C2D but I am thinking I wont use the power of it.

Could you please give me advice on the best 'bang for buck' on the processors above, I may have missed some other ones.

Other then that I think I am done and will be ordering this afternoon :)

The best bang for the buck processor is definitely the E6300. It wipes the floor with the competition for a great price. To go along with it I'd suggest a mobo like the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3. It'll allow for excellent overclocks while not being too inexpensive itself.

Maybe but that is gonna be at least £200 for the combo and its way too much.

Originally my budget was about £400 but I know that I am gonna have to go over that. Fairly flexible about it but ignore the C2D processors since I want something to compare it to and see if the cost difference is worth it since I need a new mp3 player too.

EDIT: I am also not against overclocking if that helps but I havent done it before

Also there is a skt 939 AMD 64 4000+. I dont mind skt 939 since I rarely upgrade and there will be new skts by the time I do

Bump

Really want to get this done tonight.

Out of:
3500+ 939 Venice £55
4000+ 939 £65
3500+ AM2 £65
Opteron 144 £65
P4 3.0 GHz £57
P4 820 £70

I have thought about overclocking but the good boards come to more then the processors which I think is a bit of a waste. So I think that rules out the opteron and venice.

The pentiums are said to run hot? Is this the case? Also I think they may suck too much power in a 380watt machine.

That leaves me with the 3500 AM2 and 4000+ 939. Obviously the 4000+ is the faster processor but will DDR2 ram give me any increase?

Any ideas
