Hi,

As title.. slightly different to the normal requests about what are the best virus packages etc.

What im after is a completely 'NO-HASSLE' virus package. The main things im after are...
1) Updates itself completely silently
2) Minimal system resource hog

Its for my folks, and the chance of them getting a virus at all is pretty low compared to most people. I tried AVG Free Edition already but even after me going throught the options/setting it still seems to have a fair few balloons and notifications that need attention just to keep it updated. Are there any virus progs that after you've installed you can completely forget about? Im prepared to lose a slight amount of protection for zero hassle / telephone support

Cheers.
:D

NOD32 without a shadow of a doubt, I genuinely forget I have it installed most of the time. Never errored, never let anything through, quiet as a mouse and my system runs like lightning still with it on. :)

No, there's no free version of NOD32. but...

"You pay for what you get".

Keep that in mind. ;)

Hence why NOD32 costs only <£30 and Symantec Corp. Edition costs £150+ ;)

My vote goes for: Symantec (aka Nortons) AntiVirus Corporate.v9.0.2.1000 Final

Norton 2005 is to Symantec Corp 9 as Symantec Corp 9 is to NOD32. :)

Despite being a smaller resource hog than Norton 2005, it is still a huge hog compared to NOD32.

With NOD32, there is virtually no system performance decrease, however there is with Symantec Corp 9.

I couldn't recommend NOD32 more.

Great post! The OP asks for a free or cost-effective solution and you compare a £150 corporate AB product to a £30 home product! Lets say goodbye to common sense shall we? :D

Besides, I can tell you with confidence that Norton corporate ain't all it's cracked up to be by a long chalk. Panda Clientshield is a better purchase in that league, the amount of ex-Norton clients we have is testament to that. ;)

I have used lots of virus scanners in my time, and the only one that has stayed and is recommended to people is AVG Free.

a) It is free
b) System resource usage is tiny
c) It updates itself automatically

Not sure why you are receiving pop-ups from it, I literally get maybe 1 or 2 a week at most. I would even pay for the AV program if it became none-free because I think it is that good.

I find Kaspersky to be nicer to my system than NOD32 :) I have used both for several years now, and after a long term usage of both of them I think I like Kaspersky more, but that's only a personal opinion, both AV software are extrememly awesome :)

NOD32 all the time, try the 45 day free trial. Just give it a go, I promise you will like it.

I forget its installed sometimes, I have it set to auto-update at 6am every morning and do a full scan once a week at 3am on Saturday.

No complaints here, going into my 3rd year of subscription and its worth every penny.

NOD32 without a second thought.

Not only is it light on system resources, but it also picks up a load more viruses than Norton! As I found out when several NAV subscription expired, and I installed NOD32 onto those machnes.

Don't use that one sitre as gospel, plenty of other professional sites contradict that information.

And for the record, the best detection rate and engine of any AV program is without shadow of a doubt Kaspersky. It's a bit better than NOD, but more system intensive as a result. Also made by ex-KGB members. :D
