Firstly theres no need to start multi threads, im sure we all done been there and done that but you need patience ;) I spent the up until 3am on sat and all sun morning trying to figure out why my new build wasnt posting. A bit of patience and calm thinking narrowed it down to the HDD that was most likely to have blown.

Have you tried resetting the girlfriend, might relieve the stress.

Just take the disk out of the gf's machine, plug it into a working machine and copy the dissertation off, then fix the original PC at leisure.

i thought to clear the bios you had to remove the battery, turn it on for a bit, then off again, and then put the battery back in. might help.

Other wise, spend £50 on a old P3 system and slave the drive to that.

I am putting a new comp together, and load defaults save and exit fixed the checksum error, resetting the Bios might not load defaults. If that is your problem.

Try and see if you can disable the stata controller in your BIOS, might force windows into realising the drive is an EIDE drive.
