Complexity of a DVI cable

Hi

I have an LCD TV i would like to wall mount at one end of my living room. The wall in question has on the other side a large walk in cupboard. What i'd like to do is drill a small hole through the wall and feed the cable through to the cupboard side. That way there'd be no cables trailing from the TV and i'd be able to have a media PC connected in the cupboard.

The difficulty is that i'd like to the hole to be as small as possible to limit damage to the wall. A DVI connection is over an inch wide, where as the DVI cable and power cable combined would be less than half an inch. Removing the plug from the power supply is obviously a simple matter, the DVI not so.

How complex is a DVI cable? Would there be any way to reconnect a severed cable if i cut it? Or perhaps there's an easier way?

Thanks in advance.

(i considered placing this in Home Cinema but this is more hardware related, or even electronics)

get a cable with a DVI to HDMI connection, then a HDMI to DVD adaptor to change it back to DVI?

It would be much better than any attempt to cut and reconnect the cable.

Hi, that's quite a good idea...hopefully these sites/information should be able to help you...

Here
here

This I found on another forum after some Googling...

Pins 1,2,3 = Pink, White, Black
Pins 6,7,8 = Black, White, Orange/Brown
Pins 9,10,11 = Beige, White, Black
Pins 14,15,16 = Red, Dark Brown, Orange
Pins 17,18,19 = Thin Black, White, Thick Black
Pins 22,23,24 = Blue, Yellow, Not connected
Pin C5 (horizontal pin) = Not connected

"black" on the signal pairs basically means "shield" - might not appear black but as loose shield wires around the pairs...

Note that Pins 14 = +5V, Pin 15 = Ground, Pin 16 = Hot plug detect.

All of thst info should give you a better understanding of what needs to be done. I personally think it's a cool idea to hide the cables, but is something I'd personally rather not do. :)

Hope that's cleared it up for you.

Thanks both for replies.

Certainly the HDMi connection is much smaller and i considered it, but still i'd rather drill a hole the minimum width possible. It's an old flat and it doesn't feel right to drill 1cm+ holes in the solid walls.

Maybe it's not going to be feasible to cut the cable but i wondered if anyone had any experience of this.

I thought i mentioned that i didn't want to drill a big hole. :o

Seriously though, thanks for the diy tip but the wall's papered.
