Hi,
Im currently running an ageing socket 939 winchester 3000, which is in desperate need of an upgrade, so this is what i have come up with. I only have about £200 give or take £50. All of the other components will be reused from my current system.

I am fitting only a single 2 gig stick of RAM as i dont have the money for 4 gig, but still want to have the option to add another stick later if needed.

Intel OEM 8300 processor
Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L Mainboard
1 X 2 gig Corsair TwinX PC 8500
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7

What do you think of the components? Anything I should change?

A few questions about this setup
1 It seems as if this will work fine on my Enermax NoiseTaker 485watt PSU as it is still only taking the 24 pin and 4 pin connections. Is this correct?

2 Is the upgrade to Vista (32) a worthy one yet as I am still running on XP and am quite happy with the way it is performing. If I did "upgrade" to Vista would the system performance actually decrease?

3 Would I also need to get thermal paste for the cooler or is it supplied?

4 I am fitting an old 6600 GT PCI Express graphics card to it. Would there be any problems running this in a PCI Express 2.0 port?

Thanks very much for the help :)

No system wont be overclocked. Just been reading the mobo manual, it says the ram slots are 1.8volt, and the ram here is between 2.1 & 2.3v. Will this cause a problem?

Should be fine, the RAM will need the stated voltage to run at the speeds it's designed for. But at stock it should be no problem. Do you really need PC8500 RAM if you're not overclocking tho? Seems overkill to me. I'd just get 4gb of Geil Black Dragon RAM now if I were you - it's barely any more expensive!

It all should work fine on that PSU. Gfx card should be fine too, the mobo should be backwards compatible.

I think Vista is likely to be slightly slower than XP, simply because it's bulkier with more graphical elements. However, if you compare Vista on the new PC vs XP on the current PC, the former should be much quicker ;)

Btw, why go for 32bit Vista? You'll need a 64bit OS to access memory above and beyond 4gb, so now is the time to change! Before you know it we'll all be using 32gb of RAM and 128bit OS's will be released...... :P

Lol, your probably right :)

I was thinking that I'd need PC8500 RAM as the mobo can handle that speed without overclocking it, i think it just needs to be turned on in BIOS.
