Hi Guys

I am looking at starting my own website for myself. I want to break into media/film composing and need to set up my own personal website.

I have absolutely NO idea on where to start with this and i would be ever so grateful if anyone can give me a few tips. I'm fairly computer savvy and can pick up things very well.

I basically would need to build myself a site that looks clean, proffesional and has the ability to host music samples.

I have seen some of these packages you can buy that help you set up a personal website. Should i get one of these or are they a waste of money?

Cheers

It depends what you are trying to achieve with the website.

If you just want something that involves minimal effort and works on a standard format then wordpress would be a good option. You will probably be able to find a plugin that will enable you to add in music samples etc.

If you wanted to have a lot more control over the creation and look of your website then i would suggest starting here http://www.w3schools.com/ and learning the basics of HTML to start with. Then from there you will need to start writing stuff and to do that you can use the basic notepad program in windows or you can go for something a bit more advanced (and a million times better) and download notepad++ http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

You will need to get some hosting sorted (search for hosting on these forums and you will get a lot of results) and then you can access your hosting with an FTP client like filezilla http://filezilla-project.org/. The ftp client will be used to upload/download files from your host.

Then for page debugging you should get the firebug plugin for firefox http://getfirebug.com/ with the FireRainbow syntax highlighting add-on http://getfirebug.com/downloads#firerainbow, and that will enable you to see exactly whats going on with your page so you can fix any bugs and things.

Going back to the packages you suggested, don't bother, they are a waste of time 90% of the time. You will learn some invaluable skills if you do it yourself. Hope that helps.
