Looking to spend about 2k on a suzuki Sv from 2003 onwards for my first bike... Is it wise to go comprehensive and play safe or is tpft all I need?

if you haven't been riding long and it doesn't cost too much more, look at fully comp.

personally if i was spending 2k on a bike i'd go FC, but its up to you if you think the extra premium is worth covering your back.

Depends on excess and price difference of the policies really.

If the FC excess is low with not a huge amount between FC and TPFT then go for FC.

If there is a high excess or the price difference is high then go TPFT.

Just depends how willing you are if worst comes to worst and you lose a 2k bike for the sake of saving (potentially) a few hundred.

My first years insurance after passing at 21 was £1.5k for a GSXR600 (Fully comp). hehe.

Depends how much the bike is worth tbh, e.g. I would never go TPFT on the beemer and stand to lose £12k in 1 crash.

with a £2,000 bike and insurance at £600 vs £1400 and those excesses.. I would be choosing TPFT for sure.

Getting quotes of £1.2k FC on 650 adventure types, with excesses of £450-£1000.

TPFT is ~ £500 with similar excesses. Would people risk TPFT on a £3K bike?

Brand new rider on a new license, one previous "at fault" (don't get me started) claim on my car policy, but 2 years no claims since then.

That seems very expensive for an SV, I'm guessing OP is quite young, or is it a high theft area?

The FC policy + excess comes to almost the value of the bike, so I wouldn't even contemplate it. Stick the difference in premium in a savings account. TPTF covers you from theft anyway, so unless you literally turn the bike into a pile of scrap then you'll have a pretty good chunk of money to fix damage from any minor spills. If you don't bin it, then you have a nice lump of savings.

Cost of Total Loss with FC = £1650 to £2200 (plus loss of NCD etc.)
Cost of Total Loss with TPFT = £3500-scrap value of bike (only lose NCD if third party claim involved)

Can you afford to lose the difference? Personally I'd go for TPFT in this case as well, but your situation may well be different.
