Compressed HDD - Win7 Repair

So I foolishly compressed my netbook's primary hard drive (stopped part way through, though the damage was done) and now it won't boot.

I've read a great deal of articles and posts online over the last few days, but am hoping some enlightened soul will give me the breakdown.

As far as I understand it, my best bet is to create a bootable Win7 USB key (not sure how to do that yet) and try to repair my Win7 install. I'm working from a Macbook now, so I'm concerned about cross-platform issues.

Failing this, I could re-install Win7 and lose some valuable pictures and work done over the last six months. However, I was planning on taking the netbook with me to Europe this weekend, and don't have the time to find my Win7 disc and install key (moved flat twice now, hectic).

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I doubt it's recoverable tbh, I've never had the guts to cancel mid way through a compression to see what happens :D

Use something like dropbox or windows live sync in the future to keep live copies of your files, and always, always keep an external hard drive backup of your files.

Do you have a W7 disc? I'd just chuck it on a USB stick and start a fresh (format the hard drive during install)

-You could try booting from a Ubuntu USB stick first to see if any of your files are in tact

I can't find my W7 disc anymore, but I'm told I should be able to find a copy to use on a USB - is that right?

What's this about booting from a Ubuntu stick? Never heard of using a different OS on a bootable USB to recover files. I'd like to try that first, and re-install W7 later on when I find the disc.
