compressing avi files?

Hi all, i just got a little mini dv camera, and am transferring some videos across to my pc. They convert to AVI, but the file size is massive, something like 1 gig for 8 minutes of footage. I couldn't see any way to reduce it within the bundled software. Any recommendations?

which video codec are you using to compress the file?

i'm not sure what you mean to be honest. I'm just plugging the camera in, loading up motionDV studio, and transferring the video from the dv tape onto my hard disk.

Try either importing the .avi's into Windows Movie Maker and then convert them to .wmv or use Windows Movie Maker to transfer the files from the camera directly in .wmv format.
