Ok, so I've started to think there must be a better way to do this....

I'm currently using MakeMKV to create MKV's from my discs, and am slowly going through them, but it seems to be creating absolutely mammoth file sizes... (24GB for a 2hr Blu-ray...)

Is there anything I'm missing here, that explains why I'm creating such massive file sizes?

Also as it's bugging me having to reinstall the program due to the whole Beta thing, does anyone else know if there's a better alternative program out there?

If this sounds normal, and there is no good alternative, does anyone know something that can compress this into a better size?

Thanks
kd

You can use handbrake to reduce them down to a smaller size

-Use makemkv first, then handbrake

Look for a guide on it

The reason why the files are so big is because you are essentially repackaging the original streams on the disc without recompressing them. You'll need to recompress the streams and then add them into the MKV. You may also be adding extra audio streams or using uncompressed or DTS Master Audio tracks. Again if you don't mind compressing them you can get decent quality audio by compressing the audio track into a multi-channel AAC.

I've been repackaging my HD DVDs into MKVs. Absolutely brilliant being able to buy great films in 1080p for absolutely peanuts :p Think I got 5 HD DVDs for the price of a Blu-Ray film and the drive was cheap to buy :D
