Compression Fittings & Tubing Question

Hi all,

Quick question, I've been using AIO coolers and currently i have the NZXT X62, Was thinking in going custom, Im a little confused on the tubing i would need for certain compression fittings, For example if i wanted to get this fittings...

i've chosen the link by demeter, on the first link there are many sizes (fittings brass fitting matte black electroplated finish for 1/2" id 3/4" od tubing (12.7mm id 19mm od) low profile design g1/4" thread easy tool free coin installation) but when i go to tubing by demeter theres 19/13mm does that mean it will fit? im a bit confused by all that, im just not sure would tubing i would need, there are different sizes for the compression fittings also but im guessing so long as they are g1/4 they will fit the blocks?

hope that doesn't sound too confusing, apologies if it does.

update: i have just been reading the guides here, very useful :)

On the guide it says the barbs are more secure so i will go for that although the compression fitting looks better i think?

That fitting for your first link is for 19mm Outer Diameter (OD) and 12.7mm Inner Diameter tubing. With compression fittings you need to get both right with soft tubing to get a secure fit. So the tubing you would want is the XSPC stuff here: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/water-cooling/components/tubing/by-diameter/19-13mm-tubing

For your other question, in my opinion solid compression fittings are also very secure and in years of use not had an issue with them. Secure them down properly ensuring a secure fit and you should be fine.

They will work, not a fan of the Ek fittings myself, rather expensive and quite "short" so you dont get as much tube grip, but they do come in some awesome colours.

Tube wise I always go Mayhems now, its cheaper and works just as well if not better, I had a few leech issues when using the EK tubing, Your mileage may vary.

I also only use the excellent Mayhems tubing now. There really is no need to pay any more for tubing. I use the 16/10mm tubing with 7/16" (16/11mm) compression fittings and found these Monsoon fittings worh very well with the Mayhems 16/10mm tubing. It can be a tight fit but that is easily solved by dipping the end of the tubing in hot water to soften it juet before fitting.
 
I've been using the Monsoon fittings since they came out too, I must have bought 30 in all over my last 3 builds including rotary bends and 45 degree bends and never had a problem.
 
Yeah I saw the part where it says barbs are more secure... I can see how because with a barb and clamp you're clamping the hose over the ridged bit rather than compressing it up against the ridge... seems like it could be prone to slippage but this thread has put my mind at rest about them a little
 
Imo barbs superior functionally, compression superior aesthetically. Though spring clamps on barbs looks quite nice.

I went from barbs to comps back to barbs. Worm drive clamps, ugly as sin but work the best.

That's pretty much exactly what I told my friend recently when I set up a water loop for his GPU to reduce noise. He doesn't care about aesthetics, only functionality and price so I installed barbs for him. Barbs are far easier and usually cheaper to work with than compression, especially the Monsoon ones. However, I do care about aesthetics and use Monsoon. As per the response from @bcfc0703 I've also been using Monsoon for years and not had one leak yet...unlike my XSPC radiators!
 
its a bit like they say you can't call yourself a true petrolhead until you've owned and an Alfa Romeo and its broken down on you, you can't be a true watercooler unless you've had an XSPC component leak on you lol ;-) Having said that my Photon 270 res does look lovely lit up :-)
 
So true about XSPC. Colleague at work was putting together his first custom water loop a few months back and his angled XSPC joint leaked on him. My first XSPC (Rev 1) RX360 leaked out of the box. Recently my RX480 developed a leak but it be fair it was after 4 years or so. Leaked developed in one the radiator tubes. In the tear down I decided to replace the RX360 with an EK while doing putting in the new (EK) 480.
