Just been down to my local garage where i bought my current car from (Seat Ibiza 1.2SX) i want to upgrade to something quicker, I've looked into a Leon Cupra R but can't justify it or afford it tbh, then i looked at the Ibiza Cupra but thats still a couple of grand outside my price range so i've just test drove the Seat Ibiza FR TDI (130bhp).

Well, my opinion, it's much much quicker than my current car, it's a deisel so more economic, it's very torquey (229lb/foot). Also, i like the handling in the Ibiza's. At first i was put of by the 0-60 time of 9.4secs but it honestly feels quicker than that, it seemed to take about half the time it does in my 1.2sx so is definitely quick enough, now, i suppose i'm thinking with both my head and my wallet here but this does sound like a good compromise between performance and price (i'll get it for £12225 with discount from the garage with £4500 p/x of my '04 1.2SX) i can afford the payments and even though it's slightly slower than the cupra, it still looks good and can handle its own and it's only group 8 insurance :D

Anyone have any experience of one or is there anything else around £12-13k worth considering that's new?

There is the Fiesta ST at around £11500. Or the Fabia vRS for £11200 which is the same really as the Ibiza FR TDI just £1k cheaper.

Whay does it have to be new?

You can get a 04 / 54 Cupra for 13k....

THe ibiza cupra is rare in nearly new format, i looked on the forecourt for one and they never had any, i asked how often they come along and he said virtually never with less than 10k miles on, rare as rocking horse poo, add to that the fact it's a group 16 car, insurance is gonna be hell for a driver with ~ 2 years as a driver, and only one years NCB.
I want new coz i'd look after it better, my 1.2sx was a nearly new '04 plate with 6000 miles on it and you just know it's a used car. i have to drive with my foot right down all the time to get any kind of power, don't get me wrong though, i do like the car, just pees me off when i want to overtake someone and i have to make sure there's nothing within 3 miles coming the other way (slight exxaggeration but still a problem)
I suppose it wil be a novelty buying a new car though, choosing the optional extras, and as i said in my OP, i don't need the speed of the cupra, the FR is quick enough for me.

You could have either a Leon Cupra/FR/Cupra R petrol or the 150bhp Diesel Cupra for that money and itll only be 1-2yrs old....

Look for a new Leon 150bhp Diesel Cupra - they are end of line now with some very large dealer discounts available, around £13k should be possible. A lot more car for your money than the Fabia VRS or Ibiza.

Again, it's group 18 insurance, and as old as my current car. Trust me, i've considered them, but they had Leon FR's there with delivery mileage for £15k

Please dont buy a new car, especially if your getting it on finance the amounti of money you will lose will be totally stupid and pointless, its not worth it.

If it's new, just need to factor in the drive-it-off-the-forecourt hit in it's value.

My Ibiza is probably worth tuppence ha'penny by now, but then it's got nearly 70k on it at 3 years old.

For me to insure Cupra's it's ~£1.3k and i'm 22. So that's roughly double my current car insurance costs (1.6 Leon). However, i'd far rather pay that money and get a nearly new Leon Cupra than buy a brand new Ibiza diesel!

It would probably be a good idea to sit down and work out costs for ownership over a year or two, and compare the differences between Leon/Ibiza, Petrol/Diesel, Cupra/Std, etc... :)

Some people have got to buy new cars so that we can buy them secondhand, let the man spend his money :D

for what its worth i'd be looking at a 1year old Leon FR 150.

you can get them new for about 14k now, so a slightly used one could be a bargain. Much better car than the Ibiza.

But ultimately go with what makes YOU smile i suppose...
