Hi,

I'm thinking of doing a CompTIA A+ course, distance learning. Would you recommend doing that course or do you think another may be more suited?

I know CompTIA has exams whereas I'd prefer one with continuous assessment.

There are quite a few distance learning providers, but it's hard to know which are "dodgy". Any recommended providers?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks guys for the advice :)

Any recommended distance learning providers? I wouldn't know where to start with just a book in front or me! I'm 17 at the moment.

Cheers

Don't bother with them, if you've built your own computer then you're already well on your way. Have a look through the exam objectives on the A+ area, there are a lot but they're pretty basic / logical things to remember if you've got hands on experience of building computers and having Windows mess you around.

Thanks :)

Not sure how well I'd get on without a provider giving me guidance, we will see :)

Obviously practice is required, any hardware etc required for practice etc?

Also will look at MVA.

I know Comptia uses Windows Server. Would it be beneficial to have a home server that I build and play around with to learn etc? Possibly virtualise...dev etc...

Thanks again for the replies.

I want to do a course that will help me get a job (I'm interested in servers, networking, etc). I want a course that has an element of practical work and hands on experience (such as building a server to practice with) rather than just looking at books and websites.

I'd like to learn new stuff as well, things that aren't as basic.

So, a course that's got a practical element too - is comptia the best one??

Thanks

CompTIA is abit of a waist now, we don't recognise it at work as a hard course todo. Think where you want to go within IT and go from there. So if your interest is Microsoft go the Microsoft. If you want to do networking go Cisco like the Network + > CCNA.

Of course I have no idea how much you know all ready.

Thanks for the advice. Will take a look at the MCSE's and CCNA's.

Not sure what's best to do at my age - I mean, not bragging or anything, but I do know quite a bit about the server side of things as well.
