Here is my hardware:

With one stick in (either stick), the computer boots fine.

With one stick in a blue slot and one in a black (they're meant to be both in black), the computer boots fine but recognises only one of the modules.

With both sticks in blue (as per motherboard instructions), the computer will not boot and doesn't even seem to post.

BIOS is up to date. It seems the sticks are functioning just fine.

Where on earth do I start?

The Asus can be fussy. I had this issue with one CPU.
Try the following.

1. Take out the RAM and CPU.
2. give the contacts a wipe over on the CPU and RAM - Dry cloth should do.
3. Pop them back in making sure they are seated very well and that the RAm is pushed fully in (those Ram slots on the Asus are poor imo)
4. If it still fails. Do a full CMOS reset. Disconnect mains. Take the battery out for 10 minutes and short the CMOS jumper for a minute.
