computer bad cold starting

Athlon 200+ computer first start will go into windows then lock, second start (safe with network) loads then locks (nothing in the way of errors in event manager ) third straight in ok this post on it , restarts ok.
m/b k7s6a elite. two sticks of ram . vidio card , network card, cd,floppy, zip 300w power.
my thoughts its hardware am i correct, but how do i fix this please all contributions gratefully recieved.
 
First thoughts are... check for bulging or leaking caps, especialy around the cpu socket area, similar thing happend with an epox motherboard I had a while ago.

Also try with only one stick of ram..if the problems still occur try running the other stick on its own.Sounds like a RAM problem to me.
 
To see if its software or hardware, install a 2nd copy of windows and dual boot, then try booting into that fresh copy and see if you still get problems. If you do, its hardware, if you don't its software.

Its also probably easier to run memtest and see if you get errors rather than moving sticks of ram about.
 
It was the ram 512mhz of 'crucial' ram faulty, many thanks to you all for your help i am well happy intermittent faults are so difficult.
