As this is a forum full of computer enthusiasts, I thought I'd throw this one out there. I have carpet so want to protect it reasonably from the wheels of my chair.

My current Chair Mat is one I got from Ikea like 5 years ago. It's not bad but it's rigid, and it's got cracks in now where I have been rolling the chair up onto it.

I think it's time for a new one, and pondering a softer one that won't crack like this one has. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Really? I wasn't aware of that rule :D

This is an actual serious question though. For computer chairs I'd probably have no problem just getting my Ikea Markus one again tbh.

This may not be of help depending on the thickness of your carpet but I have a hard wood floor and have placed a large/similar coloured piece of Lino.

I could have used a mat like this 5 years ago. The lino beneath me is wrecked, so many lumps and cracks, even gouges. Had no idea a chair could do this to the floor.

honestly I've been using a plastic carpet protectors (I bought a couple for a good price a while back) and in my experience they don't seem to last more than a year (note I work from home doing pc work too, so it's a good 12+ hours a day), they just seem to crack where the wheels sit and then it spreads outwards.

I'm going to grab either some vinyl flooring (ie like for bathrooms) or some more carpet to sit on top, edging towards vinyl because it's smoother so wheels will move easier, when this mat fully dies on me.

I use (and have done so for many years) my chair on the carpet. I wasn't aware this was an issue... there's certainly not any damage?

They do an excellent job of keeping the carpet in one piece.

Highly recommend, although it ensures the carpet beneath is perfectly clean, with a slightly darker outline around the protector :D

Rather then getting a hard plastic mat for my chair I bought a cheap rug to use instead. When it gets to the stage that it's worn away (after two years it hasn't) I'll replace it.

I am on laminate not carpet though.

I suppose you could consider replacing the wheels with studs, I'm sure they're for sale on flee-bay and then buy a set of normal sofa caster carpet protector cups. That's if you are able to have the chair static, swivel it and get into the chair without moving the chair feet and then swivel back.

Every so often you would need to rotate the studs/cups on the carpet and possibly move the computer on the desk a few inches from side to side so the carpet gets equal wear.

I'd have thought a good but untidy solution would be to buy a piece of 5 ply, lay in on existing carpet, then as others have said lay a similar piece of carpet on the 5 ply. That should certainly preserve the original carpet.

I've actually searched for a decent chair (NO DON'T BAN ME PLEASE) with studs but they seem to be extortionately expensive. Go on speck me one!!

You'll find carpet off cuts everywhere if you ask, and usually for free as it's useless for pretty much everything else. Been using mine for 6 years now and its still going strong. will probably get another 10 years use out of it.

I do have some spare carpet under my stairs from when it was put in, would need some cutting down to size etc.

I could see it being a little annoying as my chair only just fits under my desk at the right height, carpet will make it higher up than my reasonably flat chair mat is right now.

My carpet isn't thick pile, but it's not really short either, somewhere in the middle.

Looks exactly the same as the Ikea one, but £5 more
