Computer Crashing and stuttering.

I built my own computer a couple of months ago, for the last couple of months it has been stuttering roughly 6 times a day. It it hard to explain, it will freeze for 2 seconds unfreeze freeze for 2 seconds unfreeze and do this around 6 times with the sound also stuttering everytime it freezes. I put up with this as I couldn't find any solutions.

However now my PC is freezing constantly, I press CTRL + ALT + DEL and nothing happens after 5 mins the computer shuts down.

Anyone know if I can run some diagnostics or do anything to find out if it's hardware or software related?

have you got another PC handy? the easiest way to isolate what the problem is is to switch individual components into/from the other PC and see if they work.

not sure about software diagnostics.
