Hi,

was having random crashes on the computer. Decided to stress test to work out the problem. Ran Intel burn test for around 3 seconds and the computer shutdown. I went to reboot and the motherboard lights just flashed and thats it.

No PSU fan, no mobo lights, nothing.

Changed for a known working PSU, same outcome.
Removed everything from the mobo except the cpu, same result.

removed the cpu so just power to the motherboard, PSU fan spins and the 'CPU fault' light comes on on the mobo.

CMOS has been cleared and motherboard is on the latest bios

Board is an Z390 Aorus Pro
CPU 8700k
RAM DDR4 3600

What i would like to know is, have you any ideas i can try? if not is there a way to confirm whether its the cpu or mobo?

Not much of way to know without swapping parts.
But at least try first with one DIMM at a time.
Also remove any part not needed for booting into BIOS just to minimize variables.

Personally, I would say the VRMs on the motherboard have let go. I've had a Gigabyte board die in the past, same symptoms. CPU was absolutely fine in a new board.

Obviously, it's hard to say for certain unless you have another board to try...

BANG ON!

i decided to try again with the CPU in. Switched on the PSU, Pressed the power button and there was Rice Krispies moment (snap, crackle & pop) and a lovely puff of smoke. Looks like one of the chokes has died or a resistor relating to it.

Hopefully everything else survived.
