Computer death - probably fried mobo??

Just updated the bios on a gigabyte ex58 ud5 mobo. System rebooted three times fine and all was well, but when I was away from the computer something happened. The main power trip switch for this part of the house was thrown and all power went off. When I turned it back on the computer was dead. No mobo lights or anything. All other peripherals attached to the same power supply are fine.

I think the mobo is cooked. I don't know why a bios update could have led to this especially as the machine rebooted fine multiple times, but mobo looks very dead to me.

I'm thinking I need to buy a new mobo tonight, along with new cpu and ram, as I don't even know if you still get socket 1366 mobos anymore?

Anyway, does anybody have any ideas on how I could maybe rescue the system, or do you agree it's dead meat

Also, if the mobo is fried, will my ram still be ok. I think the hard drives and gfx card will be as this happened to me once before and hdds and gfx went into the new build and were fine.

More likely it's the PSU. Good job it didnt fail during the update.

Remove it from the rig. Flick its power switch off. Put a paperclip between the black and green pins in the 24 pin block. When you flick the power switch the PSU should start up if ok.

It's the psu. Did the test with the paperclip and nothing. Got an older psu from the attic and the mobo is fine and the system boots. Only way I can tell it boots though is because I hear the windows start up sound. I can't get the screen on as the psu just has old pci express connectors. One of the connectors is 2 pins short. I've tried plugging it in anyway but nothing on the monitor. Anyway for me to get a picture with this setup??

I don't think so. Maybe time to go back up the attic though. You thinking there's a standard power adaptor to pci express job. You are proabably right, but I don't think I will be able to find it. Off for a look. Thanks.

Got the screen back on. Found an old 7800 up the attic. Screen resolution very messed up and can't make it any better, but at least I know the computer is running.

Anybody any idea why my power supply would die about 20 minutes after a bios update. Is that coincidence or what??

What make is the psu? Corsair have 7 year warranty

It's a corsair (Corsair HX 1000W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply), bought from ocuk in 2009, but I am in too much of a hurry to mess about with rma. How long would all that take? Too long for me I'm guessing.

This happened to me before. Wtf is wrong with psu's. The house has trip switches, and the desktop is plugged in to a good surge protector, so how did it die? I bought a really good psu for this system, and it kicked the bucket after 3 years???

Trust me, PSUs are quite capable of dying all by themselves without any outside interference :p

You know what. After having this happen twice - I trust your opinion 100% :D

It's not big and it's not clever! Get it together psu makers. If not you will soon be legally obliged to point out that this all singing all dancing psu you are hyping in the sales blurb will fall over for no particular reason at whatever time seems appropriate to the mindless psu.

I had no problems with my 9 year old AMD setup, which is made of horrific components, I think the only branded item is the CPU...

The PSU there is just a black box with nothing on it... been going strong for 9 whole years without a hic-up...

My Corsair 650W (I think, not too sure) on other hand died within 2 months in my all branded Q6600 build, taking out my HDD and mobo with it.

I am really starting to loose hope in this "branded" Psu thing...
Since I replaced that corsair with a 15 quid PSU and its been going for like 2 years now...

At least my CM 700W silence edition isnt causing concerns atm..

Maybe its time to look at ocUK PSU range xD
