Woke up this morning to find that my pc wasnt exactly running correctly.

When switched on it made all the normal noises but the screen didnt detect a signal. Now this would mean graphics card to me but when i pressed the cd tray that didnt come out or register at all. So could this be a motherboard problem at all?

At work at the moment and cant remember the motherboard type (got it a while back) but the graphics card is a Geforce 6800GT. Nothing was overclocked either.

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas for me to try when I get back home.

Do you have any kind of signal lights on your motherboard? To check status, whether it is indeed getting power etc..

If it made the normal noises it could well be the Graphics card, I would first try another card in the machine and then go from there. Eliminating the possibilities one by one.

Maybe try resetting the bios if your graphics card swap doesn't work, but until you eliminate the graphics card and give us a bit more information it is hard to advise you effectively, as it could be one of MANY things.

;)

I understand I obviously havent given much information, but was just seeing if anyone could guide in the right direction.

I had this happen when I first built the PC, cant remember how but I got it working again. Likely it might just need a CMOS reset. Will try a different graphics card later.

Forgot about the little display on the mobo, will take a look later as well. Though there are no strange beeps etc. just normal bootup noises.

Just got back home and had a look at the system.

First ill describe what happens when I press the power switch:

I turn on the power to the pc and all the fans etc start spinning but after about 4 seconds the pc suddenly automatically powers down. The lights on the mobo stay on though (normal when power supply is on). There is no other sound besides the fans.

If I try pressing the power on after this has happened then it does nothign unless i switch the power off aat the wall socket, then I can turn it on but the same problem as descirbed above occurs again.

I took the whole thing appart from scratch and made sure there was nothign shortcircuiting inside. then reassembled with all the basic parts required. same problem occurs.

I have also tried resetting the CMOS. But this had no effect at all.

Specs:

ASUS KN-E Deluxe MOBO
1GB Geil RAM
WD Raptor 72GB
Geforce 6800GT
TAGAN 480W PSU

Any help greatlely appreciated, thanks.

Could be anything.

Get hold of the following, which you know to be working: CPU, RAM and graphic card.

Systematically try each one. If all fail, I'd safely say the motherboard has had it. :(

I had a problem like this once - although mine didn't stay on for anywhere near 4 secs. For me, it turned out to be a faulty PSU - as soon as any load was taken from it, it failed. If you can swap in a PSU to check that, then I would.

Ok, well borrowed a mates graphics card to see if that worked. and well it did the same thing but when i put the graphics card in my mates machine it doesnt work anymore :(. it beeps once on bootup so thats defintiely a dead graphics card. Still unsure about my problem. May call out a pc repair guy as I havent got the time to be fiddling with it.

I also had a similar problem to this and it was psu related. Wierd that it killed a graphics card tho.

If you do call the pc repair man out be sure to let us know what he finds. ;)

Sometimes its just not worth the effort of trying every bit in every combination...

THANKS GOD!!! well the only problem with my mates was the HUGE amount of dust had got into the AGP slot. so just back to the original problem now.

Any power supplies that are recommended from Overclcokers I can get oredered tonight? Cant hurt to spend a few bob on a PSU. Got an old socket 754 AMD board with a 3200 chip. Dont really overclock at all so no need for a super one. Though one which is compatible with todays boards etc would ber usefull icnase it is the motherboard thats dead.

So any psu recommendations?

Just found an "Enermax FMA Series 460W PSU EG465AX-VE" for just over £45.

Perfect for you, IMO!

From Ocuk, Seasonic S12 430 should do a good job, although its a little pricey.
If silence isn't a requirement, enermax antec or tagan i suppose.

Is your current one still under warranty? If so, rma it.

Get a Tagan. OcUK use them in their pre-built systems - reliable, excellent quality and reasonably priced. You can have a more than adequate one for £50.

Got a tagan at the moment, quite happy with it. Though it is definitely out of warranty. Had it for about 2 years now. Will take a look at those suggestions. Theres no special requirement for a PSU on an AM2 board is there?
