This is the scenario. On Sunday I pulled an old hard drive out the cupboard and installed it as somewhere to keep extra data. I have since disconnected it but kept it in the PC chassis since I don't have enough cables.

Since then my computer has been very slow indeed. Even loading Google is demanding. Games crash, mp3s stutter, it's a trial to do anything at all.

I was getting 'disk read' errors on trying to boot but those seem to have gone now.

This is quite debilitating and I have no idea what's causing it. I have done a disk check, RAM diagnostic, virus check, spyware check... which have returned nothing but low-level threats. My reattaching the old hard drve [which, by the way, was empty and had been dbanned] and the problems since then may be totally unrelated.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?? Even during writing this post the PC has stalled a couple of times for about 30 seconds. CPU usage appears to be idling at max 10% for both cores.

Sounds like the data cables have given in... although it could be CPU misalignment. Try take it out, and put it in another way.

I changed the SATA cables and the difference is amazing - everything is incredibly quick now, thank you both!
