http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-237-OK (with a gtx70)

I was thinking of getting this, do you think it will be enough? Well I know it's enough, but what sort of frames am I looking at (I'll be getting addons too)? I'm looking for at least 30fps. I've asked a few people already and they say I should get at least an i7 due to it being a quad core, but I'm trying to keep the cost down as I have enough to pay right now. I just want it to run smoothly, with good graphics (which the gtx70 will no doubt provide).

Also, can overclockers change a pre-built system and add an overclocked i7?

Thanks.

There are OCd i7 bundles already, but obviously a lot more cash than that i3 system. A quad is definately important for FSX, as far as I'm aware, but an i7 is not really any faster in gaming than an i5 quad which is much cheaper if you're on a budget. An i5 760 build with a 470 would be a fantastic bang for buck rig - probably about the best bang for buck available today (whilst still having plenty of bang :)).

I'm sure there will be a suitable pre-built i5 system, but if you build yourself you'll get more for your money. And building yourself is easy and fun!

Thanks for the reply.

Couldn't overclockers change the i3 to this for me? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-339-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1672

Don't see why not...

Possibly, give them a ring, but why would they when they already offer an i5 system (last time i checked)? Just pick an i5 pre-built system. They use a better mobo for OCd quad-core i5 systems, as they have had problems with big quad-core OCs on the little UD2 as it has no MOSFET heatsinks. Self build is much better, or a compromise is a pre-OCd CPU/RAM/mobo/cooler bundle, then add the rest yourself.

FSX is CPU hungry as it is a very detailed sim.

I'm trying piece on together, but I don't really want go above £700-750. Could maybe perhaps go a bit more, I'd have to see.

Looks good to me. Any optical drive will do, the market is full of drives which are clones. Case-wise, if you can stretch to a 600D or even a 700D it would give you room for the future but on a budget the HAF-X is supposed to be good (even though there have been reports of it frying Firewire chips).

i5 would be perfect especially if you can overclock to 4GHz. i7 is of no added value for FSX as it is unable to utilize hyperthreading. In terms of graphics card, if FSX is your primary goal and you want to keep costs down then look at a second hand GTX 260, 9800GTX. A 470 is major overkill for FSX but would be perfect for other gaming etc.

Be sure to read all the tuning and fsx optimization threads to get the best out of fsx. There is a ton of information out there! When you say playing at 30+ fps, even the best computers struggle to get this when they have payware addons! Just aim for smooth gameplay.

Two HDDs too would be beneficial

Edit; i5 would be better than i3 as with FSX SP2/acceleration they made it able to use more cores! The reason why its so cpu hungry is that its written with very old code and very poor one at that!! Essentially its very similar to FS9 (2004) which would have been developed around 2002. So nearly 10 years old!!

With some of the pretty eye candy addons (which can be seen in the screenshots thread in PC games) is a 470 really overkill? Not sure myself. Worth having for black ops and other games though.

It really is. This is what I mean about poor coding! Agree it'll be great for BlackOPs but I'd recommend a 1GB 460, unless planning on using a dual monitor setup where the 470 would be better.

Agreed some of the shots are wonderful but CPU processing power is the key here. And to be honest I'd love to know if those screenshots are of actual gameplay whilst their flying smoothly!:p

I think hes on the right lines with going for an i5 overclocked bundle tho! If budget can stretch to the 470 yeah go for it!!

TWO (500GB) HARD DRIVES rather than a single 1TB is important!

As for case, all personal preference. Mine is the Coolermaster CM690 and couldnt be happier with it. Fits full length cards, my GTX 260 with ease, and good airflow to. Resonable price as well which is always nice!

Any DVD drive pretty much will do.

Bit over budget but including a 470.

Also, I have a 250gb sata, would this work on the new computer? I'm not going be using a lot of space so if I can save a little more then that'd be great!

Yeah 250GB should be fine, ideally fsx wants to be installed on its own drive in the first segment. What speed is the disk? REX isn't actually to bad on performance. I was pretty surprised how well it runs. On my GTX 260 it runs perfectly fine. It does suffer if you going mad with the weather. Just in the process of reinstalling fsx and addons but I'll post some pics in the other thread when its done. What I've found is the biggest knock on performance overall in fsx is AI traffic, moving cars and weather.

I think your pretty set on the 470, so I'd say go for it and at current prices is fantastic bang for buck!

Understand about getting the bundle and gota say if something balls up then at least you can send the whole lot back together.

Not sure if allowed to give details of other forums here...but check out simforums and in particular how to best install fsx (look out for NickN's posts, usually stickied at the top) and follow them to the letter! Trust me it makes a hell of a difference if you do it right first time but takes an age! esp when all you want to do is fly!:p

What addons are you looking at getting btw?

Yeah that hard drive looks fine for either OS or FSX.

Good selection of add ons there too. PMDG and Heathrow are pretty tough on systems tho. I only manage to get about 20fps at heathrow in default fsx aircraft and no traffic!

Orbx looks amazing, very tempted to get it but at £60ish seems a bit steep but quality looks very impressive. Might buy the orbx blue - south australia.

Couple links here that I followed when installing this weekend.

1. Installing FSX

2. NVIDIA Inspector Use this instead of the NHANCER in the above link.
