Computer freezes when opening full screen games/applications

My almost 1 year old PC basically freezes when I open a full screen games such as Counter-Strike: Source. It does load eventually but the entire computer locks up for about 30 seconds. I can acctually restart the computer faster than the time it takes to alt tab in/out of the game.

This has only started to happen recently, i've tried using older Catalyst drivers but that did not help.

I also get the problem when I do Ctrl Alt Delete to get to Task Manager, both screens go black for ~15 seconds then it pops up with the menu.

Any other ideas what it could be?

Thanks

Is it all steam games that have this problem? Or is it any game launched outside of steam that has the problem too? I only ask as I've had similar issues, and my problem is/was down to my net speed. Running malwarebytes/adaware etc and cleaning up tracking cookies etc will make sure your bandwidth isn't being drained by unwanted nasties collecting info about you.

I had similar problems awhile ago and all i had to do to solve it was reseat the card and remove the pci-E connectors .

Thanks, I will look into it.

I do not believe it's anything to do with steam as the computer also freezes when I attempt to go to task manager. My computer should be virus/malware free as I do regular scans with eset and malware bytes.

DirectX and .NET framework up to date, Catalyst 11.2 and 11.2 CAPs (using older ones)

Games work perfectly if I run them windowed, it's just opening anything full screen locks up the computer.

I've tired turning every fan to max to cool the GPU to ~44 degrees but that didn't help so I don't think it's a heating issue.

Any other ideas? :(

looking at what u said it does show its something to do with graphics card, when u set it to full screen the graphic will redware current settings and apply the resalation set for the game...

as for as my knowlege is thats what happens, but if my knowlege is correct, then it would also prove that its your graphics card having problems setting it selfs up as when u try to use task manager, it will tempary redwar the image you see, so it can safely post the option for opening the task manager, when you close the screen witch u select the task manager from at, the previous image will be restored back onto display and will then run processing to open the task manager (hence why some older CPUs have a delay befor that pops up)

but like i said, thats if my knowlege is correct, this methered are really old methered of safly opening options that you may need if your computer was not responding without this

*edit* this is only a theroy i have, im not to sure its ture, but it would seam pretty realistic and i know it was used in more older style pcs for safty of graphic compoments, this would only prove that your graphic card is haveing provlems redarwing images and displaying new onces tho

*edit* if this is ture then u maybe albe to claim a RMA

As I am using Windows 7 when I press Ctrl Alt Delete it loads a new full screen with the options to log off, switch users, and task manager - It's loading up that new screen that causes the freeze for 10 - 15 seconds.
