PC just died again - I replaced the PSU last night and the spare I had has blown too, so I'm guessing there's something foobared inside.

Taking the whole lot apart leaving just the HDD and Mobo attached makes no difference so I think it's definitely screwed.

I need something to tide me over so was looking at this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-028-OK

I'm way out of touch with current hardware so will this play the latest games ok or is the video card not all that?

I looked at a few other places but tbh haven't seen anything I like for the price range (I'm a bit stuffed after Christmas :( )

Advice appreciated... while I'd love to stretch the budget I need to buy a car too in January :(

It's an ok spec, but nothing special. Should handle most things though. I have to say that it's still quite a bit of money to "tide you over" with. Are any of your components re-useable? If so what do you have? I am sure the guys could help sort out a half decent Conroe rig based on a 6300 for around that price if you can re-use your hdd and optical drive etc.

if you got *** hdd,and optical drive and a case ytou can get above for same price and that will plat all latest games at a high level if on a 17 or 19inch screen.

Well I could re-use the Asus DVD-RW drive I have but to be honest the rig is a bit old now. I'm toying with the idea of getting a barebones or ready built system because I simply can't be bothered putting something together from scratch again :)

Nice... I'd probably get a new HDD and obviously a PSU to be honest - This case is pretty pants as well so that'd be on the cards. Are HSFs still a nightmare to fit? Last time I built a machine it was an AMD T-Bird on a KT7A-RAID board with a Thermoengine cooler I think... Thanks to the clips and a screwdriver I ended up doing a bit of mobo-personalising (ie: blood on the board!)

Cheers!

nah very easy to put em in now most conroe coolers just have 4 pins you push down one in each corner and thats it. i used to have nightmares with the old version like you mentioned lol

OK cool, any recommendations on a case, HDD and PSU then? I'll go the extra hundred quid or so and maybe drop the memory down to 1GB?

Ta muchly... why do things always go wrong at times like this eh? :)

Hi chaps,

Last night I found a Lian-Li aluminium case upstairs in the "storage" room (midi tower.. not sure what the model is just yet - I'll check when I get home). Would this have problems with the PSU and HSF being able to fit as I remember a friend complaining of having to get a low profile HSF for one of these? Or is the mobo layout of the one recommended above not a problem?

Ta muchly :)

dont know exaclt what case you have but i guess the arctic pro does stick oit a bit. allthough i would have assumed that things should be standard proving its a atx case. but just incase and i get the impression you wont be doing any overclocking of you processor i have changed the cooler and oem processor to a retailed boxed version with comes with its own cooler. while this cooler isnt quite as good its perfectly adequate for non overclocking systems and is smaller than the aftermarket ones. i have tweaked the system a bit and tried to keep price down. you could get 1gb or ram but really 2gb will make a big differnece ian games and stuff. have added a 160gb hdd. a dvd rewriter and a psu. the psu is only 400 but its 400 of a good brand. if you intend to put a biiger more powerful gfx card in at a later date then you may need to get a bigger one say a corsair 520 wich is £20 more. anyway

oh have you got a copy of windows if not thats another 60 :(

I still have my Windows 2000 Pro CD (I refuse to use that piece of XP bloatware, especially as I can get the whole W2K OS to use around 110MB of memory for when I'm gaming.) - so that's cool :)

EDIT: Found that the spare case upstairs is a Lian Li PC50. Will this be ok or is the PSU bay going to obstruct the cooler if I choose to opt for the Freezer ? :)

Nope, it has a flap at the bottom for USB ports etc.. "PC-50 Aluminium Mini"

Hrm, the "mini" part has me concerned that it may be Mini-ATX - I'm pretty sure it isn't though. :S

Doesn't matter anyhow - can always get another case if this will restrict me. Will just flog this to a mate :D Any case recommendations?

One Q - will that corsair memory be ok if I want to overclock a bit seeing as this processor seems to clock up quite nicely with that mobo (from what I read)?
