Computer Hangs, How Do I Test Hard Drive

Hi,

I have noticed my computer begin to act a bit sluggish and freeze at times so I decided to reformat and reinstall windows just incase it was a virus or some software problem.

I reinstalled windows there and only installed drivers and even when the computer is booting up half of the taskbar shows and it takes around 5 seconds to load the rest. General use of the internet/firefox seems to act a bit sluggish aswell. Not the internet speed, the program itself.

I have a feeling it could be my hard drive is failed. What is the best way I can run a test overnight to see if there is any problems/errors with my hard drive so I can arrange a repair/replacement if needed?

Nothing has changed and my temps seem excellent.

I did download the Seagate Hard Drive Tool to check it and it came up it FAILED A SHORT DST and I should try the Seagate DOS Disc to try and repair, but I was also told if their tools fails a drive on anything then that is a case for a replacement as it will go eventually.

I will try that program you posted there and post back but is it possible to sort the hard drive replacement via Overclockers or do I have to go through the manufacturer?

Update: HD Tune says my Health is "Warning". I am running an Error Scan just now.

If you are getting warnings like that it's probably logged SMART data warnings to the Event viewer aswell you can see, don't mess about anymore, replace it. There shouldn't be any health warnings against a healthy drive.
 
Ok thanks.

I posted a topic in the Customer Support thread about it.

I also took my old 2.5" laptop hard drive to use in the meantime and although it is faster I ran HD Tune on that hard drive and it came back saying "Warning - Calibration Errors". So it looks like that hard drive is on its way out too lol.

Looks like I am going to need to test my hard drives with this program to see what ones are worth throwing out or keeping.

Also, is it worth checking CPU/Memory aswell too. I mean can faulty memory cause the hard drive to have read problems?

I have no idea what 'calibration errors' are according to HD Tune, I assume HD Tune reads SMART data? ...as opposed to just deciding for it's self that there is an issue ...in anycase I know that Crystal Disk Info does, maybe have a look at what that says.
 
Either way if you run a hard drive check and it's giving you "Warning" signs then its best to replace it as it will break.

Only thing I never though to try is out of the 3 hard drives I have checked, although they all gave different error messages I never changed the SATA cable or SATA port.

Is that worth checking or would they all give the same error if that was the case?
 
Can I just ask too would I be best reporting the fault in the Overclockers Customer Service forum or going straight through Seagate to get it replaced?

(I posted on Friday in support forum but haven't had any reply yet)
