I am interested in learning how to build computer hardware, be it usb devices or pci cards, but i am getting nowhere with google searching on how to get started, most of the help is geared at people trying to build pcs, but I want to be using micro controllers and breadboard level stuff along drivers to interact with software.

I already have some background with basic programming and electronics, but only as two completely separate entities so I do not think I will be starting from scratch.

Any suggestions on courses or such which would help with this?

You need to start by looking at things like auduinos and go from there
Expanding auduinos with sensors and electromechanical devices
Plenty of guides and kits on building robots and such things
I recon this would be a good way to begin to combine your programming and electronics skills and pick up the knowledge on the way

I used Arduinos a bit in Uni. Used a programme called MAX/MSP for the programming. Made a guitar effects pedal using light sensors and stuff. Pretty cool but that was 4 years ago now so I don't think I'm going to be much help sorry!!
