Computer instantly turning off on boot

Hi guys,
As the title says my computer is instantly turning off on boot. I've started to unplug items and all I have left is the case fans, GPU, CPU and c drive (ssd) still plugged in and the problem is still occurring. Last change I made was to add another HDD but that was about 4 months ago.
Prior to this occurring I was watching TV on my PC and then switched it off before going to bed.
Wanted to get some advice as to what could be causing this before I try to remove the GPU (cpu cooler off job).

Specs.
Superflower 650w 80plus gold
MSI z97 gaming 7 with i5 processor (the k version from that gen)
MSI gtx 970
2x4gb of overclockers RAM
4 case fans and 2 CPU cooler fan
Windows 8.1

Forgot to mention.
After I unplugged the connectors for the case front panel. The computer did boot up. I switched it off using the mobo switch and then the problem came back after trying to boot it again

Also system wasn't running an over clock.

You might need to remove the contents and test on a bench to rule out a possible short.

This + 1

Also go to one stick of ram, then swap to other if still wont boot.

The fact you mention it worked "Once" makes it sound like its not broke, just something stopping it.

Thanks for the advice. Going to have to wait till I get home (currently at uni) before I can bench it.

In the mean time I may be able to burrow a PSU from my mates computer (before I move back home). Would it be worth testing out a different PSU?

Is it possible for awkward angles and too much stress on the sata connections/cables into the mobo, to short circuit the system. I lightly pressed against them to "straighten it out" and now the system has booted. I've restarted it 3 times using the mobo switch and it has booted up all 3 times. Currently I've left in running for about 2 minutes and it seems fine. If you want I can try and post a picture of the connection.

i dont think thats possible... it sound like short tho.. do you have a spare psu ?

Just an update. The PC has been running for the past 13 hours. I'll leave it on for now and when I get home I'll take it apart and rebuild it.

Try reapplying the CPU thermal paste, I had a similar issue not too long ago, turned out my thermal paste has dried out and it was hitting the thermal cut off straight away (was an AMD cpu)

To be sure you understand 100%, when people say bench you just literally take the motherboard out and put it on top of the box it came in. It sounds like something is shorting on the board so a reasonable test is to see if it boots ok outside, also be sure there is no excessive pressure on the CPU cooler - which CPU by the way?

Does sound a lot like you can solve this by removing it, if it seems to be a short you can remove it and line the case with some relatively thick paper. Place it back in and screw it down, then remove it after a few mins and see if there are any obvious indentations in the paper from solder etc on the back of the mobo.

Try re-seating the memory (clean the slots). If it's still the same after that, try a different PSU. If this doesn't fix it check for a short circuit

@Smiffy
It is an i5 4690k. I have none of the component boxes with me. when i get home I plan to bench it and clean out components with a can of compressed air.

@XysteR
I did reseat one of the sticks but the other is under the CPU cooler.

Left the computer on overnight and when I woke up it was still running. However today I have had 2 bsods. One was a "kmode exception not handled" and the other was "bad pool caller". I think in both instances I was playing games and watching a youtube video when they happened.

I've also had active tabs in chrome crashing on me. In one instance I was playing games and watching a youtube video when the youtube page crashed. In another instance I had been using a GPU renderer (Blender Cycles) with a web page open on the other monitor. Came back an hour later to find the web page had crashed but Blender was working fine. I have about 20+ tabs open and the rest were fine.

Would it be right to assume that these are related to my earlier short circuiting problem and could this be a sign of memory issues?

Chuk Chuk, take the cooler off and clean the other memory slot, It is possible that the thermal paste may need to be renewed anyway - two birds, one stone. If it's still doing it after that, you could try a process of elimination with removing one stick, and vice-versa
