computer is going bye-byes :-( help needed pls

Hi all,
I thought I would tap in to the Christmas spirit and ask for help!! :o :o
I've had a bit of a problem for the last couple of weeks and its finally getting worse.....my computer wont turn on....let me explain a bit better, a few instances when it wont...

1. If i put the comp to sleep it will not recover, I get the lights on inside of the case, no keyboard lights and the monitor will come on (doesnt show anything but a blank screen) then switches itself to standby. Cant use comp.

2. When I close the comp down (only way is to pull the plug) and try and turn it on again, all I get is all of the symptons above, not even a post screen, and no beeps. Cant use comp.

The only way Ive found to get it to work again is to pull all of the plugs out and leave it alone, this worked fine but now the time i have to leave it is getting a lot longer, started off being about 15mins but now its taking a few hours before the bugger will turn on??

Tried doing searches on here and internet but to no avail....can someone please help or at least tell me which components might be causing this problem??

I've also tried re-installing windows thinking it might be an update causing the prob but with just bare-bones os and nothing else its still doing it!!! Also tried setting the bios back to default.

Wierd thing is when it does turn on and loads up anything works fine??

Please help ;)

set up is....

AMD PHENOM II X4 940 3ghz
ASUS M3A79-T DELUX
OCZ GAMEXSTREAM 700W ATX2 POWERPACK
BFG GTX 285
VISTA 64 BIT

What lights?
Motherboards have commonly one led which tells that 5V standby is on.
Do you have any fan connected straight to PSU which could tell if PSU starts?

lights are from the fans
Are those fans working?

That would mean PSU giving out at least something and motherboard not starting properly.
That overrated OCZ doesn't have high quality parts and while failing capacitors would show most easily in cold boot it would be still useful to test with other PSU.

thanks for the help EsaT, yeah all of the fans are lit and working (antec 900 case)
Is there a way to test the psu, dont fancy forking out for another one if its not the main cause of the fault?? Thanks again

right heres what ive done so far to try and eliminate a few components....

1. unplugged then replugged all cables/power
2. Swapped gpu's
3. Swapped cpu's
4. Swapped mobo's
5. swapped main power cable.
6. swapped monitors.
7. cleared CMOS and also updated bios.

(thats a lot of swapping :D:D:D)

Waiting for a pal to turn up so i can swap out the psu ( which I think might be the root of this), failing that the only other thing I can try is another HD.

Could my probs be related to the PSU or the HD??

And after all that guess what.......its still bloody doing it!!!!

HDD shouldn't be able to cause much any problems for other components unless there's short circuit in it which would shut down PSU... but that would surely mean HDD being also permanently useless.

thanks guys, well after spending most of the day yesterday and with the help of a friend (who's PC we canabalised) we've finally found the problem.......its the PSU, as soon as we swapped his for mine, all of the problems dissapeared...YEY!!!
Just need to phone up OC now as I purchased it from here, its less than a year old !!!!
