i have a problem whereby my computer keeps rebooting. It starts up i see the bios it then goes to the 'start computer with last successful configuration, start normally' whicheva one i choose once it gets past the bios it goes to this screen and then regardless of which option i choose even to start in safe mode it beings to do it then restarts. my hard disk is a fresh copy of windows so its definetly not that windows isnt installed properly.

what could it be?

have you installed any drivers with your fresh copy?

one may be dodgy, otherwise, i'd blame the ram..

you'd blame the ram. what would that do ? i cannot remember changing or having the incorrect ram but you maybe onto something here.

i doubt its the drivers because everything is currently working 'properly'

after first boot from installing XP, do you get to windows? if so and it goes **** up after installing drivers, then one of them is to blame

if it NEVER reaches windows desktop, then its either bad ram, or your graphics card doesn't like your chipest

try flashing motherboard bios, and possibly try a different gfx card (ati instead of nvidia or the other way around)...

could be many things mate..

right im aware it could be lots of things i swapped the graphics card already to no success. I havent flashed the bios (how do i do that) and i havent replaced the ram so i might try doing that. i got x2 256s sdram or ddr not sure gonna check when i get home.

does it reach windows from the first boot after installing xp though?

basically i installed windows on another operating system and then i put the hrad disk back into my home machine and its not getting past that stage.

umm, I'll need to translate that by adding some words at random...

1. you had a disk with an O/S on it.
2. you installed another O/S on that drive (O/S = XP, AIX, Win3.1?)
3. you took that drive and put it into another machine
4. now it doesn't boot

?

.

your following me!!!

i had a disk with an OS on it.
i installed formatted and installed another OS on it via another pc.
i wacked the newly winxp OS in my home pc and now
it doesnt boot. but i always had a problem and im sure its not because 'u cant just wack a new hard disk into another os. (how true is that statement ???)

ill speak when i get home.

i think it is your motherboard. i had this problem. a way to get round it though, is leave it rebooting and eventually it should get into windows, now whenever you want to shutdown, hibernate - then it doesn't reboot.

dunno why this works but it did for me. the problem only stopped when i changed motherboard.

thanks

daven

that is a joke you're saying i should keep it hibernating for me to use it otherwise it'll go into a loop! my mobo ?? argh..

i swapped the ram last night out of 3 different ones none of them seemed to work in terms of stopping the computer restarting. some of them just had a constant beep so i knew there was something wrong there. the original one didnt beep and the computer still restarted.

its very true

you ask for help, i told you what to do!!

boot from cd with the pc you intend to install xp on, and install on that pc

sometimes you may get away with it (swapping hard drives), but its a really bad way of doing it, why did you do it this way in the first place?

i swapped the hard disk coz i couldnt boot up in that computer. didnt even get to the bios stages. so i figured if i install windows on that hard disk then at least i KNOW that its not the hard disk. which was true it wasnt the hard disk. so it must be a hardware or bios problem. anyway after i found out the pxe error i had it was because my pc was trying boot off the network card. because i couldnt get to the bios i just removed the card then it got to the stage of 'click here to restart windows with the last workable configurationi settings or start windows normal page. so thats why. still though it doesnt get into windows either way so im still stuck.

what motherboard or pc do you have..

you will be able to get into the bios somehow or other..

firstly, get a ps2 keyboard for it (just incase its got crap usb legacy support)
after turning the pc on, press the DEL key repeatedly, might get you in, also try, F2, F10, F12 (reboot before trying each one)

then set the primary boot to cd, and secondary as IDE0 (or hard drive)

understood. but now i took the network card out i was able to view the bios. i then set the priorities to hard disk 0 so it booted up using the newly installed windows hard disk. although it only gets to the choice option to boot up with last known workable configuration or normal windows. problem is both of them set me in a loop straight back to that same screen so what do i do ? thats the only problem i have now. It's not my RAM or graphics card (physically). It might be in the bios but i checked and it seems ok.

eh?
that's not what you said in the OP....
and this is the first we've heard about a PXE error too.

it's kinda hard to troubleshoot with soundbites ya' know... :D

anyway, now you are past the BIOS stage, what's the problem with installing XP from the CD ?
I don't get why you stilll haven't done what Bledd said in post #9

.

yeh i got that pxe after solving something else(cant remember a lots gone on). Erm i havent got another hard disk yet to install windows on. I got data on the newly installed xp hard disk that i tried to boot up on my home pc. so i now want that as a secondary hard disk. I am going to have to install a new hard disk onmy home machine on another hard disk. Thats why i havent done what he said.
